For as long as I can remember I have always been the person in my family “taking care” of others. As a child, I remember playing in the neighborhood and being given the nickname “Mom” because I was always making sure everyone was playing safe and no one was hurt. After graduating high school, nursing was not the first career that came to my mind. It was after my older brother became sick and I began to spend more time in the hospital that I realized that this was the career I was intended for. A holistic approach allows the nurse to view the patient as a whole, as opposed to focusing in on one small aspect. By viewing the entire person, we are able to provide spiritual, medical, and any other type of care that may be necessary in aiding the recovery of our patients. “Holism involves studying and understanding the interrelationships of the bio-psycho-social-spiritual dimensions of the person, recognizing that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts,” (Dossey, 2010, p.14), which further emphasizes that by using a holistic nursing approach, we are able to take not only a patient’s physical well-being into consideration, but also the emotional, spiritual, and mental well-being of our patient’s. In nursing, it is common that we as nurses are most focused on how the patient is feeling. This can be described as to their pain level, how they slept the night before, what their apprehensions of the upcoming days may be. By being able to develop a positive and caring relationship with our patients, we are able to form a bond in which they will be able to give us the answers that we need to provide the best care for them. In my nursing philosophy, I intend on developing trusting relationships with all my patients, even if their beliefs are not the same as my own, so that they feel comfortable enough with me to be able to talk open and honestly with me. For as long as I can remember, nursing was a profession that I longed to be a part of because nurses represented the very essence of caring and compassion. After realizing my dream, I found myself working in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) where I developed a personal philosophy and core set of values regarding nursing. “Philosophies of nursing are statements of beliefs about nursing and expressions of values in nursing that are used as bases for thinking and acting” (Chitty & Black, 2007, p.319). I will treat my patients and their families in the manner that I would expect for myself and my family. To live out my philosophy of nursing, every day I must remember my patients are individuals and entitled to privacy, respect, and dignity. The families of my patients are experiencing one of the most stressful experiences of their lives. I will strive to promote an environment that is family-centered. I must remember that my co-workers may have different values and beliefs than my own but are also deserving of my respect, support and encouragement. With the intention of providing excellent care to my patients I will strive to take care of myself physically and emotionally. I understand that my philosophy of nursing may change as I continue to grow in my profession. This paper explores the personal philosophy I have as a nursing student and what I intend to convey throughout my nursing career. A philosophy is “an analysis of the grounds and concepts expressing fundamental beliefs (Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary, n.d.). Before entering into any profession it is important to evaluate your personal philosophy about the profession, as it pertains to values and principles in which believe in to guide your practice. The field of nursing is more than treating a physiological ailment, but it involves providing quality care for the individualized needs of each patient, hence being client centered. My philosophy of nursing integrates the importance of knowledge base practice of medicine, combined with addressing holistic needs of the patient and family, including the physical, psychological, cognitive, emotional, spiritual and social care (Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network, 2010). My philosophy is based on my personal values and beliefs as it relates to the body of work in nursing. As advocates, we should empower patients by encouraging them to become active partners in their own care and engage in mutual goal-setting between ourselves and the patient. We should uphold our personal and professional ethical standards at all times. When we find conflict between our personal beliefs and those of the patient, we should endeavor to find a mentor to guide us through our conflict and find a solution that meets the needs of the patient without compromising our own personal belief system. I think I am still in nursing today because every day always brings new opportunities and experiences. The field of nursing doesn’t leave room for boredom.
