In Chapter 13, Dolgin (2018) lists four different ways that parents can influence their adolescent’s career choices.

Describe any influences your parents may have had on your own career choice (or your attending college) using one of the four.

Dolgin (2018) states, “Regardless of whether parents try to exert any conscious, direct influence, the influence by example is there” (p. 369). What do you think?

Parents tend to influence the way their children make decisions, and this include their career choices. KU Vocational Choice Discussion Typically, parents hope that their children will realize success and will also be happy in life. When a child knows that he has parental support and is loved, they not only become confident but also willing to heed to any kind of advice offered (Longobardi & Harris, 2020). I know this has been the case with me, and I also believe that I will influence my own children’s career choices.

• Although I felt like I was making my vocational choice independently, I recognize the influence that my parents had on my decisions. For instance, I had already heard a lot about various careers while growing up. By the time I was making my career choice, I had some information about which vocations pay competitively as well as the ones which are less stressful. Besides, my parents had set good examples with their own careers, and hence the reason I decided to choose a vocation that is somehow related to theirs.

In addition to the kind of influence that my parents had on me, there are other ways through which families influence the children’s career choices. One may feel as if they are fulfilling their father’s expectation by settling on a certain career-line. For instance, there are people who became doctors because their parents always believed in their abilities, and also made them feel as if being a physician is a remarkable achievement.

While reading Chapter 13, I familiarized myself with a few tips I may use to influence my own children’s vocational choices. Among them include developing their knowledge of various career options as well as the merits and demerits of each of them. Others include developing the awareness of the various career resources, as well as enabling them to learn important decision-making skills (Dolgin, 2018; Olumuyiwa, 2020). Nonetheless, the best time to think about careers is when one is just a few years from attending college. Those who are very young should focus on honing their capacities to study.

peer 2 In Chapter 13 of Dolgin’s (2018) book, the author discusses the various ways in which parents can influence their adolescent’s career choices. According to Dolgin, there are four different ways in which parents can exert this influence: through direct guidance, through indirect guidance, through modeling, and through providing opportunities for exploration. In this essay, I will explore the influence that my own parents had on my career choice, explicitly focusing on the aspect of modeling.

Modeling is a powerful way parents can influence their adolescent’s career choices. Dolgin argues that regardless of whether parents consciously try to exert any influence, their actions and behaviors serve as a model for their children. Growing up, I observed my parents’ dedication and passion for their careers, which profoundly impacted my career aspirations.

Both of my parents were very successful in their respective fields. My father was a stockbroker, and my mother is a travel agent. From a young age, I witnessed their commitment to their work and the fulfillment they derived from it. They would often come home and share stories about their day, discussing the challenges they faced and the satisfaction they felt in helping others. These conversations not only exposed me to the realities of their professions but also instilled in me a sense of admiration and respect for their work.

As I grew older, I began to develop an interest in the workforce. I was drawn to the idea of making a difference in people’s lives and contributing to the well-being of others. My parents’ career paths served as a model for me, showing me the possibilities and rewards that a career could offer. Their dedication and passion inspired me to pursue a career, and I am grateful for the influence they had on my decision.

In conclusion, parents have a significant influence on their adolescent’s career choice. Dolgin argues that even without consciously trying to exert influence, parents serve as models for their children. In my own experience, I was influenced by my parents’ careers through the power of modeling. Their dedication and passion for their work inspired me to pursue a career in medicine. The influence of parents on their children’s career choices should not be underestimated, as it can shape the trajectory of their lives and contribute to their overall happiness and fulfillment.
