One of the most controversial issues facing educators today is the topic of educating students with disabilities, specifically through the concept of inclusion. Inclusion is defined as having every student be a part of the classroom all working together no matter if the child has a learning disability or not (Farmer) (Inclusion: Where We’ve Been.., 2005, para. 5). The mentally retarded population has both a low IQ and the inability to perform everyday functions. Activities such as eating, dressing, walking, and in some cases, talking can be hopeless for a child with mental retardation.  Mental Retardation in the Special Education Classroom Essay.Schooling for the disabled requires a special environment—one that only a few teachers have the gift to care for. The civil rights movement and the inclusion controversies run side by side, however the segregation factors are contrasting. Color of skin does not affect a human’s ability to learn, therefore segregation was overturned. Mental retardation, however, will affect their education and peers in the classroom.Special education students have severe behavior or emotional issues that can disturb the classroom learning environment for themselves and the non-disabled peers. Disabled students often act out from not feeling accepted, frustration from the difficult material, and their cognitive obstacles. According to the article Time to leave inclusion out, seventy percent of teachers blamed the inclusion of children with special needs for increasingly bad behavior in the classroom.
The key to any successful school district is the administration. Teachers essentially provide structure, organization, and the background of a child’s future.Mental Retardation in the Special Education Classroom Essay.  To educate students with learning disabilities, it is essential that the staff has the training and resources needed for the appropriate people, place, and time (Lazarus) (What is Inclusion, 2001, n.p). It is unrealistic to expect that regular education teachers will always be aware of the latest research or be able to readily adapt the school’s

In 1971 Mr. Imdad Siddiqui envisioned the creation of a school with the sole purpose of helping the mentally challenged children and helping them fit in along with the rest of the world. He envisioned a future where normal and special children will work together and help build a future which is made for all with countless opportunities and blessings coming all the way even for the special children. His vision to create a school for these children stem from his desire to see them move on and succeed in the world like everyone else and he worked tirelessly for the achievement of such purpose. Through hard work and dedication he was able to build this school from scratch and it has been more than 40 years since the school’s inception and little by little the school has benefited these children and helped them stand on their own feet and become independent. Though not all have been able to move on in life but there have been many who now hold their own jobs and earn a living for themselves and they always come back and thank this school for it helped them do what their parents could not. At a time when there were no Departments at the Government level for Special persons (set up in 1985) and no visible efforts for the recognition of disabled population, the Markaz was set up as a special initiative at Karimabad where it still stands today and where there are still very few or no schools for special children. The foundation stone of Umeed Research & Training Center was laid down by Ex. Governor Fakharuddin G. Ibrahim in the year 1991 and since then this centre has been performing its duties. They are still continuing to find new and better ways to help them in improving their students lives and in providing hope to their families, they also provide guidance to those children parents who are not admitted in markaz-e-umeed.

The Curriculum of the MR children

The MR children do not like an atmosphere where they feel pressure.  Mental Retardation in the Special Education Classroom Essay.Atmosphere should be made according to the mental level of the children and taking into consideration the level of their understanding, the curriculum has been formed in such a way that these children should not be a burden on others. Hence the Curriculum is designed in such a way that it can be changed whenever required according to the ability of the child.

Training Methodologies

Training provided to the children at Markaz-e-Umeed:

Speech & Language Therapy

Speech Therapy’s basic focus is on the receptive language, or in understanding the words spoken to you, also improving the expressive language, or the ability to use words to express yourself. It also deals with producing words, such as articulation, pitch, fluency, and volume. Speech problem is a common problem for many special children. They start talking very late and they cannot speak clearly and the person listening to them cannot understand any thing. They speak very little and only say few words from a big sentence, as they cannot utter full sentences. Special needs children are unable to store the words in their memory. The memory for storing of the words is increased through special attention, which is given to reduce the defect in their speech. Markaz-e-Umeed gives special attention to all of their students, to improve their speech pattern and language. Mental Retardation in the Special Education Classroom Essay.

Behavior Therapy

Some of the special needs children have an incomplete understanding and therefore, they learn bad habits due to not getting proper or any attention from their parents. Therefore they can beat up anybody, break things and learn abuse. They are very rigid and have great anger. Such bad habits pose great problems for the family, neighbors and relatives. If they were given attention by the parent from the very beginning, they would not exhibit these habits. But the parents do not pay attention to their child due to unawareness and carelessness, but when the situation is out of control, they try to admit the child and in such a case some of the institutions for training of such children refuse their admission.

When such children are admitted in Markaz-e-Umeed such bad habits of the child are eradicated because these habits pose great problems to the training of the child. This year Markaz-e-Umeed was able to eliminated bad habits of 20 children.

Play Therapy

Games are thought of as a great source of health and this is also applicable to special needs children. Games for special needs children are as necessary as for normal children. This gives physical health, social life and mental growth. Mental Retardation in the Special Education Classroom Essay.
