Impaired Health Care Providers Essay

Impaired health care providers have become common in many recent legal proceedings. According to Baldisseri (2007), an impaired provider is a person whose capacity to practice according to accepted standards is limited by substance use, misuse, or addiction. Impaired providers are blamed for creating medical errors and causing death to hundreds of thousands of patients every year. Some of the sign that can assist in recognizing impaired health care providers include falling asleep while working; increasing absenteeism; persistent errors; smell of cannabis, tobacco, or alcohol; poor personal hygiene, and slurred speech. Although nobody noticed Stephen Loyd’s behavior in his work, he claimed to change his behavior to worse (Eisler, 2014). Loyd used to cancel appointments, lagged behind in presenting his paperwork, and started to dress poorly. Impaired Health Care Providers Essay.

Most American health professionals are struggling with drug abuse, thus, risking patients’ lives. An example of impaired healthcare providers is the case of Anita Bertrand, who could not remember the first time she took narcotics meant for surgical patients. According to Eisler (2014), Bertrand had unknowingly fixed an intravenous entry in her ankle where she could infuse the drug with ease. Bertrand’s impairment went unnoticed until when she was found unconscious in her car and an empty syringe near the seat. Although Bertrand went for counseling, she could not remember how many patients that she had put into risk. Impaired Health Care Providers Essay.

Most state medical boards, which include the American Medical Association, require physicians to take an ethical obligation by reporting incompetent or impaired health care professionals (“Deal with physician impairment” 2013). When reporting an impaired provider, one must have a document or report showing questionable behaviors, as well as data indicating medical errors. Dates of alleged misconduct must be included in the report, as well as actions taken to advise patients of their rights (Adams, 2013). Approval from senior colleagues and health care administration can also help in presenting evidence of an impaired provider. Individuals have responsibilities of reporting impaired providers to avoid more errors in offering patient care. States also require health care facilities to make mandatory reporting in case they discover an impaired provider to avoid placing risks to the public.

Health care organizations potential liabilities for harboring impaired professionals include legal redress, cancelation of operating licenses, as well as civil penalty. In addition, hospitals may suffer when they lose health professionals through addiction. The medical profession may also suffer when some of its members die due to addiction.Impaired Health Care Providers Essay.  In 2013, New York’s Supreme Court declared that a hospital could not be held responsible for the death of a physician who died due to overdose of propofol medicine in the operation room (Eisler, 2014). Impaired health care providers may face legal redress ranging from suspension from their facilities to disciplinary actions administered by the state licensing authority.

Health organizations should permit impaired providers to go for rehabilitation to evade public reprimand or disciplinary actions imposed by the board. The Federation of State Medical Board recognized the need to rehabilitate alcohol and drug addicts in the health care to avoid medical errors and legal proceedings (Baldisseri, 2007).Impaired Health Care Providers Essay.  A special rehabilitation program helped Bertrand to recover from her impairment, and she never faced any disciplinary action because she volunteered to go for rehabilitation. Drug-abusing health care providers tend to self-diagnose, rather than seeking counseling and treatment from other professionals.

According to the American Nurses Association, an impaired nurse is unable to meet the requirements of the code of ethics and standards of practice of the profession. This nurse has cognitive, interpersonal or psychomotor skills affected by psychiatric illness and/or drug or alcohol abuse of addiction (American Nurses Association, 2010). Not only do these nurses create a potential threat to their clients, but they have also neglected to care for themselves. A survey has been recorded about the prevalence of chemical dependency in nurses. About 2.6 million registered nurses are employed in the United States (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2010). The American Nurses Association estimates that about 10% of the RN…show more content…
Friendship is always at stake. Fear is also factor. There is a fear of jeopardizing another’s job or license, fear of being a “whistle blower” or snitch, fear of being criticized, fear of being sued if one is wrong, and fear of being a hypocrite. For example, going out for a drink after work with a few nursing friends is an accepted social phenomenon in the United States. Impaired Health Care Providers Essay. A nurse who is suspicious of another nurse may feel guilty reporting a potential problem because he or she is one of the group having a few drinks after work. Some nurses do not want to be involved or confront another who may become angry or plead of another chance as well. Some nurses may even rationalize that if a patient has not been harmed already, then there is no reason to report the impaired nurse. Sometimes, it is always easier to look the other way and deny that a problem exists. The teleological theory may support the idea that in the end, reporting the impaired nurse may not have the best outcome, but the deontological theory continues to argue against it because it still does not protect anyone from harm. Reporting an impaired nurse provides help and support for that individual. Although patients may not have been harmed, reporting will prevent any future harm by the impaired nurse. This not only helps the patients and impaired nurse involved, but it will help the

As a medical professional, there will be times when you are faced with patients who have difficulties such as visual impairment or hearing impairment. Both of these issues deem the person to be a part of a ‘marginalized’ population; however, this should lend any different form of medical treatment. It should, though, cause medical professionals to spend a bit more quality time in caring for these individuals. A patient with visual impairment is not necessarily completely blind. Many patients still have the ability to see outlines, auras, or shadows. In order to effectively communicate and best treat visually impaired patients, you should always provide reasonable accommodations such as larger print or taking the time to read any patient material aloud in case there are questions (Osborne, 2015). Another population considered ‘marginalized’ is the hearing impaired, which comprises approximately one in six individuals (Bade). Individuals who have hearing impairment can have complete hearing loss or can simply be hard of hearing. It is important as a medical professional to ensure these patients understand any information or procedures up front and are aware of everything that happens during the medical procedure. If a person has complete hearing loss and is able to read lips, attempt to speak slower so they are able to understand more fully what is going on. Most likely, the person will have brought someone to accompany them but this is not always the case. If the person cannot read lips, writing is often the next best thing. Write the steps and use written communication as a tool to ensure the patient understands everything that is going to happen to them or that the patient should be aware of about the diagnosis (Bade). One tip to remember also is to be respectful of visually impaired patients. While this seems a moot point, many blind patients do not want assistance or do not require it. The first step in providing assistance to any person who is impaired is to be respectful and ask if they need help. The overall lesson from the simulation activity is that we should be respectful and mindful of every culture because there are cultures other than ours who have different ways of thinking as well as different methods of expressing emotions. Also, body language is so important, especially if one needs to convey information which may be less than positive in nature. If a health professional uses body language that states a severely poor prognosis while physically telling the patient things will most likely be alright, the patient will not feel the levels of confidence they would have felt had the professional utilized more positive overall tones.Impaired Health Care Providers Essay.  Each method of communication we studied during this course has been helpful because there are multiple methods of communication which go above and beyond mere verbal communication. The simulation exercise is a prime example of this. The one exercise I did not guess correctly was the last one in which the medical professional notices her patient is disconcerted. She asks a question and receives an answer that would normally not be anything out of the ordinary to the majority of individuals unless one is paying strict attention to body language while speaking with a patient at the same time. The patient was indeed in dire conditions and he did not convey this except through one general comment when stating his asthma medications were not working correctly. Had the professional not been listening effectively, this comment would have been overlooked and the patient would have potentially died. As for the last question, how to improve communication in those with low health literacy and children, there also is a wealth of information if health workers will take the time to read .impaired Health Care Providers Essay.
