However, students may also choose to use change models, such as Duck’s change curve model or the transtheoretical model of behavioral change. The diffusion innovation theory by E. M. Rogers uses communication to provide an explanation on how an idea gains momentum and spreads over a social system with the people in the system adopting the new concept and hence, changing their approaches towards doing things (Dearing, 2010). The theory emphasizes the importance of communication in adopting a proposed idea from its inception through to achieving the desired objectives (Robinson, 2009). The paper describes the implementation of the proposed solution towards reducing cases of falls among the elderly in the hospital environments, which is continuous assessment and reduction of fall hazards based on the innovation-decision process as proposed by Roger’s diffusion innovation theory. The phases according to the process include; Knowledge, persuasion, decision, implementation, and confirmation.
Knowledge Stage
When an idea has been proposed, it is important that awareness is created on all the concerned parties, so as to motivate individuals towards adopting the idea (Dearing, 2010). Since hazard assessment and reduction is a collective responsibility, it is necessary that the people in the hospital environment understand the necessity and how it contributes to the success of lowering fall rates within the facility and in return, lead to the provision of quality health care (Heslin, Berdusco, & Bernick, 2005).
