The definition of a family that encompasses the different family structures that are prevalent today is one that is made up of people who share certain common ways of life and associations. In the modern world, it is difficult to suggest that a nuclear family, which was conceived to be the ideal family to be one that encompasses the various structures that are present in the society. There are many families that are single-parent families whereas others are childless. There are different structures of families. The traditional family contains parents and children. Single parent family is one parent raising a child or children NRS-429VN Topic 2 DQ 1. The extended family is more than 2 adults with children. A childless family is a couple with no children. The stepfamily is a couple bringing in their children from previous marriages and combining into one. A nontraditional family is of parents that are adolescents and or gay/lesbian couples that adopt. It is important to acknowledge all structural types of families and how the children are raised in those families.

The emergence and prominence of same-sex marriages also makes it difficult to define a family in the traditional manner. With these aspects in mind, it is imperative that the society considers or acknowledges non-traditional family structures that were not accepted in the past. This is mainly because such acknowledgment would allow members of the society to feel accepted into the society regardless of the structure or form that their family has taken NRS-429VN Topic 2 DQ 1. Some of the non-traditional family structures such as single-parent families come about as a result of circumstances that are not avoidable. As a result, it is important when various family structures are recognized in the modern society.
In today’s time, we cannot be surprised by what kind of family structure someone is living in. The best way to approach this possibility is to avoid making assumptions by being careful with your language, letting them know that you’re welcoming of difference, being open and honest in seeking more knowledge, recognizing when your questions are encouraged or resented, and responding appropriately (everyday feminism, 2020) NRS-429VN Topic 2 DQ 1.
Family systems theory(FST) is a concept of looking at the family as a cohesive emotional unit. The family systems theory suggests that a family functions as an emotional system wherein each member plays a specific role and must follow certain rules. Based on the roles within the system, people are expected to interact with and respond to one another in a certain way NRS-429VN Topic 2 DQ 1. Patterns develop within the system, and each member’s behavior impacts the other members in predictable ways. Depending on the specific system, these behavioral patterns can lead to either balance or dysfunction of the system, or both, at various points in time.
According to Family Systems Theory, even when people may feel they are disconnected from members of their family, the family still has a profound impact on their emotions and actions- whether positive or negative. A change in one person sparks a change in how other members of the family unit act and feel as well. Though the degree of interdependence can vary between different families, all families have some level of it among the members. Family systems therapy is a form of psychotherapy that supports people in resolving conflicts with their family or problems that exist within a family unit (better help, 2021). All members of the family contribute to the dynamic of whether the family is functioning in a healthy or dysfunctional way (better help, 2021).

What is a definition of family that encompasses the different family structures prevalent today? Discuss the importance of acknowledging nontraditional family structures. The definition of family is significant and affects who is included on the family’s health insurances policies, who has access to the kid’s school records, who file income taxes, who is eligible for sick leave benefits or public assistance programs NRS-429VN Topic 2 DQ 1. The family is defined biologically, legally, or with personally constructed ties and ideologies. For some, patient family members include only persons that are related by marriage, birth, or adoption(Potter, et al, 2013). As nurses, our personal beliefs do not have to be the same as those of the patient, because families today, have many forms or appearances, are from diverse cultures and ethnic orientations. One must also understand that there are no two families alike, they are some with weaknesses, challenges, strengths, and resources. Bowen’s Theory defines the family as a complex social system in which members interact to influence each other’s behavior (Pfeiffer & In-Albon, 2022). Families are facing the effects of health challenges, including the effects of various illnesses, child bearing and child rearing, changes within the structures and dynamics, and caring for older parents (Potter, et al, 2013). Moreover, we are now living in a world where families are becoming more diverse than before NRS-429VN Topic 2 DQ 1. There are no longer the traditional husband, wife and child. Families are blended as a result of death, migration, step- families, refugee status, two- dads, or two- moms households, and do not have to be biological, as long as there is a happy union, that matters most of all.
