[Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Comparing Group, Family, and Individual Settings
Cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT is one of the psychotherapy modalities that have seen a lot of success in the treatment of mental illnesses. Some of the conditions that are responsive to CBT are alcohol use disorder or addictions generally, major depressive disorder (MDD, and the psychoses (Wheeler, 2020; Corey, 2017). Psychotherapy is a treatment modality that uses speech or language and interpersonal connection to solve mental health symptoms. CBT in particular utilizes what has been variously referred to as cognitive remodeling and cognitive restructuring. It is then hoped that once their thoughts have been remodelled, their behavior will also change. Like other psychotherapy options or strategies, CBT can be offered to an individual patient, to the family, or to a group of clients with a similar mental health problem. Of particular note is group psychotherapy with CBT because the participants benefit from Irvin Yalom’s curative or therapeutic factors. These include altruism, universality, and catharsis amongst others (Corey et al., 2018; Overholser, 2005). The purpose of this paper is to compare group, family, and individual settings of CBT.
Group, Family, and Individual Settings
Group CBT therapy is where a number of patients with the same mental health illness are treated with therapy sessions together. It usually takes between 12 to 16 sessions offered once every week (Bello et al., 2018; David et al., 2017). Group therapy differs principally from individual therapy in that it is offered to multiple patients at the same time in the same setting by the same therapist. Family therapy is closest to group therapy in that the whole family (which could be a patient, their wife and several children; or just a patient and ther wife as two people) attends therapy. Individual therapy is CBT therapy given to a single person by a counselor in every session (Corey, 2017; Corey et al., 2018; Wheeler, 2020).
The Video
The video shows a number of techniques used by the therapist in group therapy. They include cutting off, tone setting, and active listening. A perfect illustration is how the therapist dealt with the group member that was not talking. This was enabled in part by the circular sitting arrangement that allows the therapist to have an all-round view of each and every member.
