Learning Styles Essay Paper

As faculty members, you have been asked to design a 4-hour Leadership Strategies course that would accommodate the learning styles for a selected 10 students. The students have all completed a learning style inventory in which three of the students are determined visual learners, four are kinesthetic learners, and the rest are auditory learners. Note: The intended audience for the course can be either newly graduated nurses or experienced staff nurses as you choose.
Compose a 500-750-word paper which describes your plan to accommodate the learning styles of each student. This plan starts with defining course objectives; use the \”A-B-C-D Method of Writing Objectives\” resource as a guide. The objectives should incorporate Bloom\’s taxonomy, be written at the appropriate level for the audience, and include at least two learning domains (cognitive, psychomotor, and affective). Make sure to include the following:
An outline of the course content and agenda that will be covered.
Descriptions of the learning activities and the rationale for the learning activities selected
Strategies to assess learning, based on the learner objectives
Use at least three scholarly, peer-reviewed resources less than 5 years old in addition to the course materials.
Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is required.

 Abstract

It is essential for nurses hoping to be future leaders to undergo training on various leadership skill. The leadership strategies in this training included delegation, team-building, and collaboration, as well as decision-making ability. The students in this training were diverse and therefore diverse learning methods were used to ensure and facilitate effective delivery of the training’s content. Videos, charts, and notes projects are useful when teaching visual learners, while auditory students would require sound devices to facilitate learning. Kinesthetic learners would need a stimulating learning setting for instance teaching students through simulations. Therefore, the training session and also the learning objectives should take into consideration the needs of all types of learners (kinesthetic, auditory, and visual students).

Learning Styles

Introduction

Leadership skills are essential for nurses to facilitate the delivery of high-quality and safe care and develop professionally (Joseph & Huber, 2015). Therefore, it is important to provide leadership training for nurses to facilitate leadership and professional development. Leadership is an essential competency for all nurses. This paper will develop a 4-hour course on leadership strategies and ensure that the learning styles for all students are considered. Additionally, the course objectives and how leadership strategies and activities will be incorporated to ensure the course objects are achieved will be discussed.

Course Title: Leadership Strategies

Outline: Leadership strategies, collaboration, delegation, team-building, and decision-making. Time limitation has restricted the number of leadership topics to allow comprehensive training of the content.

Learner Objectives

  • Audience: Newly graduated nurses who need to develop leadership skills
  • Behavior: The new nurses will acquire leadership qualities and skills such as decision-making, collaboration/team-building skills, delegation skills, and ability to make decisions.
  • Condition: Learners will illustrate their knowledge, competency, and competency regarding the leadership skills through effective collaboration & team-work, effective problem solving, and effective delegation (Folkman et al., 2019). Learners shall be examined using observations as they perform the leadership skills and also through written examination and assignments.
  • Degree: Leaners should demonstrate more than one leadership skill. Learning Styles Essay Paper

Class Content and Agenda

Content Agenda
Ability to make decisions Learners shall acquire the target leadership behaviors and skills that will equip them with skills to support organizational goals, and promote competent decision-making during care provision (Folkman et al., 2019).
Team-building & collaboration skills

Students acquire skills and knowledge to build and develop good working relationships, collaborate with different interprofessional, and identify a common purpose while working with others.

Learners will have the ability to work as a team, become g role models, and have the ability to develop a sense of cooperation via effective communication (Rosen et al., 2018).

Delegation Learners will acquire critical thinking skills; have the self-confidence to delegate tasks, and adequately supervise the delegated tasks.

Learning Methods

Using various teaching techniques and varying teaching aids is important when teaching different kinds of learners. Therefore, using projected notes, videos, and charts will improve learning for the visual students while auditory learners will require sound equipment to elucidate the learning content (AlHamdani, 2015). In contrast, kinesthetic learners will need to learn through involvement by for example by visiting organizations where they can have hands-on and real-life simulations experiences with the leadership activities (Bhagat et al., 2015).

Strategies to Assess Learning

Written assignments: Written assignments covering the content of the topics of the course, will be given to all learners. The assignments will test the knowledge of the learners regarding the taught content. Additionally, the written assignments will allow learners to acquire additional knowledge on the course content while researching the given assignments.

Discussion forums: After learning sessions, the discussion forums shall be designed where every student will be needed to take part and actively engage in these forums. Additionally, students will be requested to analyze their peers’ discussion posts to further synthesize the learned content and gain more understanding (Cathy & Cathy, 2015).

Simulation exercises/role-playing: Learners will participate in simulation exercises where each student will be instructed to assume various leadership roles like delegation, decision-making in presented scenarios, as well as collaboration activities. The ability of learners to competently carry out the assigned leadership roles will be utilized to examine if the learner has successfully attained the learning objectives.

 Conclusion

The designed course covers different leadership strategies that include teamwork, collaboration, and delegation, as well as the ability to make decisions. The skills are very essential for nurse leaders. Learners in this class are diverse and thus diverse teaching techniques will be utilized. Therefore, the teaching will integrate different learning approaches such as videos, info-graphics, note projections, lecture notes, and simulation exercises.

A-B-C-D Approach to Objective Writing

Writing objectives is much like writing outcomes in the nursing process. Objectives must be measurable, contain action verbs, be specific, include timelines, and indicate the degree to which you expect the leaner to achieve.  Learning Styles Essay Paper

A helpful formula to write objectives is the A-B-C-D approach:

  • Audience: Who is the audience for the class? Is it a student nurse? A staff nurse? A participant in a class?
  • Behavior: What do I want the audience to accomplish by the end of the class? An example of a behavior is being able to identify the signs and symptoms of infection.
  • Condition: How will students demonstrate mastery and be assessed in their learning? An example could be that students will demonstrate their knowledge of a lab or clinical area by taking a written test.
  • Degree: How well will students perform their new knowledge? Should students be able to identify all signs and symptoms of infection, or would it be satisfactory if they identified only two symptoms?

A sample objective that illustrates these points is: “After reading this lecture (condition), the graduate student in the nurse educator track (audience) will be able to write an objective (behavior) using the A-B-C-D approach (degree).”

The above objective dictates that the student will be able to write an objective, as opposed to discussing or identifying it. Since the objective says “write,” the student must write an objective to meet this objective. If the objective instead said: “List the components of a complete learner objective,” the appropriate evaluation would require that the student list the A-B-C-D; whereas the objective “describe the components” would have students describe the meaning of each A-B-C-D step. Well-written objectives will dictate the evaluation process.
