Introduction

Effective nursing practice necessitates the application of skills, knowledge, and caring art to provide efficient and effective care. Nursing theories provide a supportive framework to provide patient care. Nursing theories provide the foundational knowledge of care concepts to enable nurses to articulate evidence during care delivery. Nursing theories are classified into middle-range, grand nursing, and practice-level nursing theories. This paper will analyze the utility of grand and middle-range nursing theories for guiding practice and research.  Nursing Theories Essay

Grand Nursing Theory (Parse’s Grand Theory of Human Becoming)

According to the theory of human becoming, during care delivery nurses should focus on improving the quality of life for the patients and promoting health (Hodges et al., 2005). The goal of nursing practice according to this theory is to improve the quality of care according to the patient’s own perspective. The theory is applied in nursing practice to transform all nursing levels and allowing nurses to involve patients in their own care while guiding patients towards the desired healthcare outcomes (Bender, 2018). Additionally, this theory improves the nurse-patient relationship, which makes it easier for nurses to influence patients to adapt to the targeted healthy patterns (Hodges et al., 2005). In research, the theory of human becoming improves understanding of health, quality of life, human lived experience, and the quality of nursing practice.

Middle-Range Nursing Theory (Watson’s Theory of Human Caring)

Watson’s Theory of Human Caring focuses on the provision of holistic care to patients to ensure care is provided to the whole patient. This involves caring about the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of patients to facilitate optimal healing process (Durgun & Okumuş, 2017). The theory assists nurses to develop caring behaviors and be caring and compassionate to promote recovery and the healing process. According to Watson, nurses should also take care of themselves to enable them to take care of patients (Wei et al., 2019). The relationship between the nurse and the patient plays an important role in the healing process and thus should be respected; therefore, a caring therapeutic relationship should be promoted.

Watson’s theory is applied in nursing practice through curative factors. In nursing practice, the theory encourages nurses to be authentic, cultivate spiritual practice, develop a trusting relationship, enable free expression during care provision, learn from the caring experience, create healing environments, and focus on both spiritual and physical needs of the patients (Pajnkihar et al., 2017). Therefore, nurses should engage their emotions in the caring relationship when looking after the health and physical needs of the patients. in research, the theory provides new knowledge on the significance of a good nurse-patient relationship for both patients and nurses.

Impact on Nursing Practice

Both middle-range and grand nursing theories help in defining nursing practice and providing a framework for nursing practice and shaping the parameters of patient care provision. Nurses can use the theories to promote better health outcomes while nurse practitioners can utilize the theories to influence care delivery strategies in healthcare organizations to improve healthcare outcomes (Hodges et al., 2005).

Watson’s theory of human caring emphasizes the importance of nurses being caring and developing good interpersonal relationships and personal contacts with the patients. Nurses can, therefore, promote a caring therapeutic relationship by being supportive and addressing the mental, spiritual, physical, and societal aspects of the patients (Jonas-Simpson et al., 2006). Healthcare organizations need to provide nurses with the necessary resources and empower them to establish caring environments. The working environment for nurses is challenging and thus a caring nursing experience can promote emotional stability for nurses and enable nurses to better take care of patients. Nurses should engage in spiritually and authentically with their patients to facilitate a more positive experience in the healthcare setting for both patients and nurses (Bender, 2018).

The theory of human becoming influences how nurses provide care, especially in ensuring the quality of life for patients is improved during the healing process. The quality of life for the patients can be improved by engaging the patient in the care to identify factors they consider important in their lives. Impact of the Theories on the Role of a Clinical Educator

Watson’s theory of care can be used to guide the integration caring values and beliefs within the curriculum of nursing education. Integrating caring in the curriculum for nurse trainees will equip them with the appropriate caring components that they can further apply during daily practice (Durgun et al., 2017). This is because cultivating caring in practice is an integral prerequisite for the nurses. The theory of human becoming can be used by a clinical educator to provide new nursing knowledge regarding lived experiences of patients, people, and communities; this contributes to new health information useful in improving the quality of life for patients (Hodges et al., 2005).

Conclusion

The selected grand nursing theory is Parse’s grand theory of human becoming while Watson’s theory of human caring was selected as the middle-range nursing theory. The grand theory of human becoming emphasizes improving the quality of life for the patients while the theory of human caring focuses on creating caring environments for both nurses and patients to promote the healing process. Both theories shape parameters of care provision and promote better health outcomes.

What is a theory?

Theory can be defined as “one or more relatively concrete and specific concepts that are derived from a conceptual model, the propositions that narrowly describe those concepts, and the propositions that state relatively concrete and specific relations between two or more concepts” (Butts & Rich, 2018, p. 101).

Theory is a hypothesis tested and measured to explain, predict, describe, and prescribe relationships between concepts and is developed through quantitative research.

The difference between a model and a theory is the amount of proof that exists in demonstrating the outcomes they predict. Both models and theories show relationships between concepts.
