Moreover, as a BSN-prepared nurse, one can work in the labor and delivery unit and work as a nurse anesthetist or a patient educator (Anbari, 2015). This indicates that when nurses enroll for a nursing degree, they have more opportunities, especially in leadership scope when compared to the LPN nurses. Nurses also need to generate evidence and participate in research to ensure the provision of evidence-based practice aimed to improve patient outcomes and prevent adverse events (Salmond & Echevarria, 2017). Moreover, nurses need to take part in professional development, training, and embrace technology to facilitate better care provision. For example, telehealth can allow nurses to monitor older adults with chronic conditions while at home and thus improve care outcomes.

The IOM report recommends changes within the healthcare system that include improving the scope of practice for nurses and higher education for nurses.
