Strategies for Developing Academic Portfolios and Congruence with University’s Goal of Social Change
A nursing portfolio is more comprehensive and detailed than both a resume and curriculum vitae (CV). As a matter of fact, a well-put together professional nursing portfolio will invariably include the nurse’s CV (Clarke, 2019; Schneider, 2016; Davies, 2015). Since the professional portfolio contains the nurse’s academic and professional achievements to-date, it is the best selling point for the nurse as a professional to any prospective employer. We all spend a lot of time nowadays on social media and one’s social media presence is currently a goldmine of information for prospective employers. For this reason, one can take advantage of this technological enabler and present a positive picture of who they actually are in including their social media platforms in an ePortfolio (Hannans & Olivo, 2017). The purpose of this short paper is to present two strategies that a nurse can use to include academic activities and accomplishments into their professional development goals. A number of strategies exist for growing one’s academic and professional portfolio. Two of these are presented here. First, one can be active in giving academic service to either the community or the university. These are usually initiatives such as community surveys where students volunteer to be research assistants and data collectors. Keeping a record of these accomplishments can enable one to include them as academic accomplishments into their professional development goals in the portfolio. The second strategy is to join one of the several professional nursing organizations such as the American Association of Nurse Practitioners or AANP. This way, one can attend lectures and conferences organized by the organization and include these accomplishments in their portfolio (Little-Wienert & Mazziotti, 2017). These two strategies are included in the professional development goals in the academic and professional portfolio. These goals align with the university’s mantra of social change in that participation in community activities such as surveys helps with better community diagnosis. Lectures, seminars, and conferences organized by professional nursing organizations such as AANP will also promote social change in that they equip the nurse with the latest evidence-based community interventions necessary for social change.
