Estrada et al. (2019) is a journal article that presents the results of a research study into the effect of religious education, as a societal factor, on the mental health of adolescents within the school setting. It perceives religious education as a societal factor that affects the lifestyle of adolescents in school as a unique patient population. The authors note that mental disorder are a substantial burden to the society because their occurrence is widespread occurrence and debilitating effects. The study reports that adolescents and children account for approximately 25% of the global population, and any health issue that is a concern to this population would be a concern for the whole world. As such, the study sought to discuss the importance of religious education in promoting mental health. Applying a secondary research approach that evaluated other publications, the study results revealed that religious education is instrumental for improving the mental health of adolescents by: promoting connectedness to enhance wellbeing and self-esteem, increasing awareness concerning religious practices and beliefs, and how they influence members of the society; reinforcing religious coping mechanisms that promote less risky lifestyles, enhance coping skills, and reduce impact of stress; and internalizing religious morality to help develop healthier reactions to stimuli. Although religious education has a positive effect on mental health, it also has a negative effect as it encourages social isolation and discrimination among minority groups. The article concludes that religious education plays an important role in improving the mental health of adolescents in school (Estrada et al., 2019).
The choice of the article is informed by the awareness that religion is an important societal factors that has significant influence on lifestyle. Understanding how religious education improves mental health can ensure that it is leveraged to maximize the benefits while minimizing the harms. The article is useful for improving the quality of patient education by identifying religious education as an element that can be targeted to improve patient education (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2020).
