Holistic Care in Advance Practice Nursing

Define holistic care in your own words.

Holistic care in nursing is a philosophical approach that guides the delivery of patient care through holism and humanism concepts. It focuses on gaining an in-depth awareness of the patient, translating that awareness into needs that can be met through nursing care, and ensuring that nursing care meets the identified needs within the health care system even as all consequences are monitored. A key aspect of holistic care is the patient with a focus on satisfying the patient with health care while supporting efforts to accept and assume self-responsibility among the patients (Zaccagnini & White, 2017).

Through the holistic care model, nursing care shifts away from the traditional model of care that only considers the physical aspects of the patient’s needs towards a personalized care approach that develops a better understanding of the patients’ true needs and how illnesses affect their responses. To be more precise, the traditional approach neglects the patient’s dignity and forgets many aspects of the patient’s needs. The traditional approach to care that only focuses on the physical aspect of needs is faulted for being insufficient to restore the health of the patient, and instead exposes them to higher nursing and health care costs, prolonged hospitalization and other serious threats (Butts & Rich, 2018). The continued development and application of the holistic care model is based on the nursing cognition that each patient has a unique combination of complex cultural, social and psychological needs that disturb his/her balance during illness, and have an adverse effect on the ability to carry out everyday activities. Holistic care in nursing helps to restore the balance by addressing the spiritual, social, emotional and physical needs of the patients, while enabling the patient to deal with the illness and consequently improve his/her life. Overall, holistic care is a subjective and nebulous concept that applies nursing interventions and approaches focused on satisfying the spiritual, emotional, mental and physical needs of patients (DeNisco, 2020).

Describe four ways you can implement a holistic nursing approach to care and facilitate healing. In addition, you may consider the intersection of holistic care and Caritas principles from Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring/ Caring Science.

There are four ways of implementing holistic nursing approach. The first way is to focus on the environment. This considers the factors that are external to the patient and how they may exacerbate or cause ill health. It could involve treating a patient for a malady by moving him/her away from a threatening environment to a new physical environment that better aligns with the spiritual or emotional wellness of the patient. The second way is to have a good relationship between the nurses and patient. Holistic care is characterized by a high level of involvement from the patient, even as it leaves plenty of room for the nurse. With the majority of the health being in the hands of the patient, the nurse can ensure that the patient is well equipped to make informed and mindful choices, engages in self-study concerning the illness and health, and adopts a way of life that is in harmony with nature (DeNisco & Barker, 2016).

The third way is to help the patients to achieve balance. This is a principle of holistic care that perceives true health as not merely the absence of illness. Rather, true health is achieved when there is an optimal balance between the spirit, body and mind. This implies that the nurse must alleviate symptoms and fix the underlying conditions while minimizing the risk of further illness. The fourth way is using holistic principles to address the patient’s needs, build a symbiotic relationship and increase patient satisfaction. This involves espousing a connection between the emotional and physical wellbeing of the patients by appealing to his/her core values, addressing the emotional support systems, and identifying the factors in the environment that impede full health. Also, it involves increasing level of trust and empowering the patient to make his/her decisions about the care reviewed, and being more involved and intentional in the treatment process (DeNisco & Barker, 2016).
