Currently I work for the Department of Corrections, and although there are theories that are specific to this setting, the place I enjoy working the most is Med/Surg. Begin able to accommodate my thought process, the way I talk to the patient and how I deliver treatment to the patient is a challenge.

Henderson’s Need theory is the one I not only identify myself with but also practice. She categorized nursing activities into fourteen components, based on human needs. She described the nurse’s role as substitutive (doing for the person), supplementary (helping the person), complementary (working with the person), with the goal of helping the person become as independent as possible. (Ahtisham,Sommer, 2015) Not only is she considering the human aspect of the patient but also teaching. Teaching is one of the fundamentals in nursing.

This theory is not only applicable for Med/Surg patients. This could be applied in an outpatient setting as well as inpatient. Being able to have control over ourselves not only incorporates the patients dignity and needs but maintains their independence.

It presents general statements by inference from the elements of the theory so that readers are left unclear on how the theory is applied within the discussed setting. This concern should be addressed by including exemplifications that presents vivid, specific examples that illustrate, define, persuade and explain the general ideas offered by the theory. The exemplifications are required for the Med/Surg unit and even when other units are mentioned (McEwen & Wills, 2018). In addition, there is a need to offer more background information on the theory, specifically how it defines nursing practice and how the patient’s independence is the highest priority in nursing (Butts & Rich, 2018). Including the mentioned suggestions is expected to improve the discussion post by making it more informative.
