Professional Development Plan Discussion Paper

Professional Development Plan Discussion Paper

There is a general understanding that competencies are an integral component of professional success. In fact, developing professional competencies presents opportunities for bridging professional skills gaps and aligning education/training opportunities with professional goals, and certification and compliance requirements. There are four strategies that have been identified as useful for strengthening the existing competencies and obtaining new competencies. Professional Development Plan Discussion Paper  The first strategy is mentorship with a professional who exhibits the desired competency level. The mentorship relationship will entail being paired with a mentor for specified professional tasks such as communicating with care teams, patients and family (Roussel, Harris & Thomas, 2015).

The second strategy is engaging in volunteer activities. Volunteer opportunities present a unique way for developing professional skills as they occur in controlled environments where the professional pressure is minimized. Volunteering involves engaging in professional activities without an expectation of remuneration as a chance to practice and develop proficiency in professional skills (Chang & Daly, 2012). The third strategy is education activities that are provided by accredited education institutions. These education activities are presented in structured formats mediated by knowledgeable professionals supported by learning resources who ensure that learners capture the core concepts.

The institutions providing education activities are facilities dedicated to offering professional development training resources and programs that support identified competencies development needs. Besides that, the programs offered at education institutions have tailored curriculums that are designed to develop the capabilities and skills required to fill identified professional opportunities (Brunt, 2014). The final strategy is participating in seminars and workshops. They are presented in short programs without a formal structure and designed to exchange ideas with peers and more knowledgeable professionals in a bid to develop the identified competencies (Stiglic, Pajnkihar & Vrbnjak, 2017). In this respect, the four strategies that have been identified as considered appropriate for obtaining and strengthening competencies.
