Part 1: The connection between academic and professional integrity

Academic and professional are two important concepts in any environment. In this case, academic integrity refers to the combination of responsibility, respect, fairness, trust and honesty as the fundamental values that guide all academic activities and endeavors. In fact, it identifies dishonesty as a violation of academic integrity, to include inappropriate conduct, abuse of confidentiality, research misconduct, falsifying or fabricating information or data, copying, cheating, and plagiarism (Karimbux, 2016). On the other hand, professional integrity refers to behaviors that are consistent with the ethical and professional expectations of the practice and work environment. It expresses the expectation of acting in consistency with the codes of ethics and conduct for that profession while demonstrating the capacity for respect, clear thought, honesty, and suspend personal bias (Hultman et al., 2018). The two concepts introduce the unconditional need for ethical behavior and honesty in all professional and scholastic activities.

Plagiarism is of concern in the professional and academic environments. That is because it involves both intentional and unintentional use of information sources without acknowledgement. Academic and Professional Integrity Example Paper Unintentional plagiarism is particularly concerning since it identifies the individual as having violated academic and professional integrity policies (Dhammi & Haq, 2016). Paraphrasing, and software such as SafeAssign and Grammarly help in addressing this concern through preventing plagiarism. In this case, SafeAssign addresses this concern by conducting a plagiarism check and identifies similar word combinations and phrases. On the other hand, Grammarly addresses the concern by conducting a plagiarism check and making suggestions for appropriate grammar, word combinations, spelling, sentence structures, tenses, and syntax.

Nursing is a practice profession that involves managing complex systems and interpersonal relationships with diverse persons with many of them being vulnerable in different ways for health or other reasons. To be more precise, nurses are entrusted with medical care responsibilities, and are expected to be respectful and cognizant of all health care stakeholders with whom they are engaged and are associated. This implies that nurses who are still in training or entering the practice environment must possess the skills to responsibly manage all relationships. Professional and academic integrities are part of these skills, formalizing the procedures and expectations that help nurses (or any other profession) address issues of conduct that could raise concerns about their capacity for responsible practice within the public domain (Cleary & Sayers, 2017).

Part 2: Strategies for maintaining integrity of work

Maintaining integrity of work implies acting with the values of responsibility, respect, fairness, trust and honesty in all professional and scholarly activities. It is important for nurses to show fairness in every aspect of their work, be responsible for their actions, and act in an honest manner. In addition, it is important to understand that there are a range of motivations that may drive nurse behavior resulting in a complex web of contextual, behavioral and situational issues that must be well understood before the student can develop and pursue strategies for maintaining integrity and ethics of academic and professional work (Carter, Hussey & Forehand, 2019; Cleary & Sayers, 2017).

Towards this end, there are five strategies that nurses can apply throughout their career to help in maintaining integrity and ethics of academic and professional work. The first strategy is to develop competence in moral and ethical reasoning. The second strategy is to seriously consider the perspectives of others through looking at them as competing and diverse perspectives that act as a resource for academic and professional work. The third strategy is to contribute to the community through knowing and acting on the personal responsibility to the academic and professional communities. The fourth strategy is to cultivate integrity through knowing and acting on a sense of honor that ranges from principled engagement to honesty. The final strategy is striving for excellence through a conscious and strong work ethic. These five strategies are linked to social and personal responsibility whereby maintaining integrity would involve committing to ethical responsibilities towards the self and others (Wong, Lim & Quinlan, 2016).
