We have learned how important informatics is in nursing, including the tools and data that can be produced. What type of data is your hospital collecting? What would be your responsibility as a nurse leader in analyzing and evaluating this data? What types of technology tools are utilized at your hospital? Do you feel there are more opportunities for tools or strategies to create better knowledge and efficiency? Give a few specific examples
Advanced Nursing Leadership
What type of data is your hospital collecting?
The hospital is collecting performance data. In fact, the hospital is collected every incidental data it can collect from interactions with stakeholders. This includes data on patients, personnel and other stakeholders to include health concerns, feedback, suggestions for improvement, and so on. Advanced Nursing Leadership Assessment Paper The collected data is compared to benchmarks with the intention of determining how well the facility has performed and whether there are opportunities for improvement (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018).
What would be your responsibility as a nurse leader in analyzing and evaluating this data?
A nurse leader is responsible for applying data analysis tools to turn the data into information that reports trends and correlations. In making sense of the data, they turn it into actionable information that is then translated into the appropriate interventions and policies. For instance, if the nurse leader reports that there is increased incidence of pressure ulcers among inpatients, and correlates the information to low nurse personnel numbers, then an intervention can be implement that increases the number of nurses in each shift to improve care of patients with the expectation that number of pressure ulcer cases would reduce (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018).
What types of technology tools are utilized at your hospital?
The hospital has an integrated hospital information system (HIS) that records all the interactions between the facility and patients. This helps in collecting data on the hospital performance. In addition, the HIS has embedded data analysis tools that help in determining trends and correlations for the data, showing how they are related and how changes in different variables can cause changes in other variables (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018).
Do you feel there are more opportunities for tools or strategies to create better knowledge and efficiency?
There is an opportunity for tools to create better knowledge and efficiency. The HIS mainly focuses on the interactions between patients and the facility. However, there are interactions between medical personnel and the facility that are not included in HIS. Integrating HIS with other data management tools, such as personnel management tool, would help in developing a better understanding of the facility and opportunities for improving its performance. For instance, it would help in understanding how personnel changes affect patient care outcomes such as repeat hospitalization and incidences of hospital acquired infection (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018).
