The Group Research Article Discussion assignment must be uploaded to Blackboard by
11:59 P.M. on the due date specified.

Research is a broad term that encompasses a number of required skillsets. These skills
include the following: Writing a testable hypothesis, conducting experiments, understanding
data, and reading literature published from scientists in various disciplines. Just like any
physical or mental skill, an individual can only get better at conducting research through
repeated exposure to it and with practice. For the group project, students will be placed into
groups by their instructor and will be tasked with disseminating a journal article from a field in
biology.
The first assignment for the group project will be for students to write a summary of a
science journal research article of their choice and submit this as one group document. Once an

through a report and presentation in later assignments. The science journal article must be:
1) Peer-reviewed in a scholarly journal
2) Contain at least five references
3) Published in the last ten years
The science journal research article must be from a credible science journal, so the article
cannot be a news article (e.g. Yahoo News) nor a review of research article(s) (e.g.
ScienceNews.org). The research article must be from a field in biology. The following is a list
of examples of fields that the topic can be over for the research article:
1) Conservation
2) Microbiology
3) Genetics
4) Botany
5) Molecular biology
6) Anatomy and Physiology
7) Medicine
8) Animal behavior
9) Marine biology
10) Zoology
11) Ecology
12) Epidemiology
If you are unsure if a research article that you have chosen is appropriate, you are
welcome to email your instructor for their advice over it. It is recommended that you choose a
research article that you are interested in, as that will help keep you engaged with the content.
You will come across research articles that are incredibly in-depth and written with complex
jargon, however, it is okay to be out of your comfort zone when trying to choose an appropriate
article for this assignment. If the research article is too complex or seems uninteresting, you will
want to keep researching articles until you find the one that seems like the best fit for you. If you
write your summary over an inappropriate article (e.g. a news article from Washington Post, or a
blog from a journalist), 10 points will be deducted from your overall grade for the assignment.
There are a number of search engines that you may use to help with finding appropriate
research journal articles. The following are some search engines that can help you:

Once you have chosen an appropriate journal article, you will include specific details
over it and write a summary over the Introduction, Methods, and Discussion portions of the
article (some science articles will have slightly different wording for these sections). Each group
member will write about their own chosen research article in the “Group Research Article
Discussion Template” document. Also, each group member will have their own color for the
document. Once this document is complete, each group member will submit it on Blackboard
by the due date. If a group member does not write about their own research article by a
certain time frame, the rest of the group is welcome to submit the document with just their
portions and will not be penalized.
After your group has submitted the document on Blackboard over each group member’s
research article, the instructor will grade each student’s submission individually and decide
which article the group will write their report and presentation on. If all of the research articles
submitted by the group seem appropriate, the group can also include their preferred article in the
bottom of the template document in the “Optional” section.
For referencing your journal article, you will need to do so in APA style format. You
may look at the example document in the Group Research folder or visit one of the following
websites that will provide you with examples on how to do so:

Research Article Title

Assessing the influence of health systems on Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus awareness, treatment, adherence, and control: A systematic review

Article summary

Introduction

The article covers type 2 diabetes a key public health issue due to its high prevalence worldwide. Healthcare systems are actively involved in the response of type 2 diabetes by facilitating effective management of the condition. This study thus aimed to examine factors in the health system that impact the responsiveness, treatment, management, and treatment adherence in type 2 diabetes.

Method

The study is a systematic review and the research methodology involved a comprehensive search of databases such as Medline, Global health, Embase, IMSEAR, LILACS, Africa-Wide, WPRIM, and IMEMR. A narrative synthesis was carried out by screening the retrieved studies for eligibility, risk of bias, and then data was extracted.  93 research articles met the inclusion criteria and thus in this systematic review.

Discussion

According to the study’s findings, the main factors in the health system that hinder the effective care provision and management in type 2 diabetes include the financial challenges that the patients face and the poor access to healthcare services and treatment. Without the required finances, patients may not afford appropriate treatment or effectively adopt the appropriate lifestyle. Therefore, the affordability of treatment costs can improve the management and control of type 2 diabetes. Utilization of innovative are models, patient education, and adopting a multidisciplinary approach in diabetes management were the factors determined to facilitate proper care, treatment and management of the condition.
