Part 1: Writing Sample: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity
In the space below write a 2- 3-paragraph analysis that includes the following:
I have analyzed the relationship between academic integrity and writing and the relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics. I have also identified strategies I intend to pursue to maintain my academic work’s integrity and ethics while studying the MSN program and my professional work as a nurse, respectively. The results of these efforts are shared below.
Writing and academic integrity are more of Siamese twins. Writers have no other option but to acknowledge all the sources that they happen to use when writing. Academic writing usually demands that writers build on the work that has been carried out by others but generate original content from the same. The writers’ acknowledgment of where they have used either the concepts, work, or words of other writers holds onto their academic integrity and sustains the various institutions’ standards and the disciplines in which they work (Bealle, 2017). As such, the relationship that exists between academic integrity and writing is such an intimate one.
As indicated above, professional practices and scholarly ethics are also interlinked. Professional practices refer to the behaviors and conduct that direct how particular professionals ought to carry themselves when executing their job assignments. On the other side, scholarly ethics entail the academic tests encompassed during studies and moral integrity regarding the course work or research. Since time immemorial, professional practices and scholarly ethics have always been entwined since it is always alleged that the two build on one another. Individuals with robust scholarly ethics are more likely to possess strong expertise that can be changed into a high standard professional practice (De Graaf, 2019). The practicing of scholarly ethics also goes a long way into building the confidence of individuals and creativity in executing various tasks, which in the long-term acts as a profound base for brilliant professional practice.
The role that Grammarly, SafeAssign, and paraphrasing play with regards to the achievement of academic integrity is by far and large a massive one. Grammarly refers to the ‘writing assistant’ that a wide range of persons, including writers’ use to check through and edit their documents (Garza & Parnther, 2018). On the other hand, SafeAssign is a denotation of the plagiarism avoidance instrument that identifies copied content in learners’ papers by detecting overlap areas between submitted course work and documented works (Garza & Parnther, 2018). Lastly, paraphrasing is the scenario whereby a writer formulates another person’s ideas in his or her own words. Grammarly contributes to academic integrity via underscoring critical errors in red and convoluted errors in yellow. SafeAssign’s contribution towards academic integrity is spotting the areas that might need paraphrasing via highlighting the similarity level index, which upon correction culminates in academic integrity. Paraphrasing promotes academic integrity to deviate from directly copying text from a source as it allows them to ethically share and integrate ideas from other sources into their writings (Garza & Parnther, 2018).
PART 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work
Expand on your thoughts from Part 1 by:
I will pursue some techniques to maintain my academic work integrity and ethics as an MSN program’s learner and in the professional field as a nurse all through my career. First, I intend to use the art of thorough preparation to maintain integrity during the entire period that I will be studying the MSN program. In most cases, some students are tempted to copy other persons’ writings that they have already submitted due to inadequate preparation. The fact that they have not appropriately prepared pushes them into indulging in academic dishonesty. Thus, in my case, before doing any interrelated coursework test, I will ensure that my know-how on the topics that are to be tested is top-notch. Besides, I will make sure that I am conversant with the art of paraphrasing and how to use the SafeAssign tool effectively.
Similarly, there are also a couple of tactics that I will employ to maintain my integrity and ethics of my professional work during the entire duration that I will be practicing as a nurse. Integrity is when an individual possesses high moral principles such as honesty and fairness in all their undertakings. Since I am conscious of the fact that integrity will be the one that will define my character, I will ensure that I dutifully follow my moral compass and maintain loyalty to my beliefs. Once I will have done this, I will have managed to uphold my integrity with minimal struggle. Besides maintaining integrity, I will also be keen to hold onto the ethics aspect as I execute my nursing duties. One way that I will exploit to make the above assertion a reality is familiarizing myself with the nursing code of ethics. The American Nurses Association formulated nursing code of ethics will equip me with all the relevant information that I will require to be ethically correct all through my working stint as a nurse.
