Cancer Awareness and Prevention Discussion Paper

Description

For this week’s discussion, please see the topic below to discuss. It is strongly encouraged that your initial post be posted by 11:59 PM ET on Thursday. It should be at least 250 words. This MUST be in your own words. Do NOT copy and paste from the Internet. You MAY use quotes from a source, but those quotes will NOT count towards your 250 word count requirement. Cancer Awareness and Prevention  Please do not plagiarize. If you use a quote, you MUST put quotation marks around it AND you MUST cite the source at the end of your post. It is NOT simply enough to put a source at the end. You should also include at least one reference in your post. Do NOT use Wikipedia as a source. For your initial post, please visit the American Cancer Society homepage. On the home page, click on “Cancer A-Z”. There is a list of numerous types of cancers. Choose one from the list (or one of your own from another site).

Research the particular type of cancer you chose being sure to address the following questions: Which part of the body is affected? What are some warning signs? Are there any treatments? Approximately how many people are affected with this type of cancer? Are certain people more at risk than others? Is it more prevalent in certain areas of the world?

In addition, what are your thoughts about cancer in general? Does it seem that there are more cases of it in today’s society? If so, why might this be the case? Do you think human-made or natural compounds are more responsible for causing cancers? Do you have any personal experience of knowing someone with cancer? Would you like to share your personal experiences with cancer?

Prostate cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the prostate gland, which is a small walnut shaped gland that produces seminal fluid in males. The prostate gland is located below the bladder and in front of the rectum.

Some warning signs of prostate cancer may include frequent urination, difficulty urinating, blood in urine or semen, pain in the hips, back, shoulders, Chest, and erectile dysfunction. However, it is important to note that these symptoms can also be caused by other conditions, so it is advisable to consult a healthcare professioonal for an accurate diagnosis. Cancer Awareness and Prevention

There are several treatment options available for prostate cancer, depending on the stage and aggressiveness of the cancer. These can include active surveillance, surgery, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. The choice of treatment is usually decided upon by a cancer specialist after considering various factors ike the patient’s overall health, age, and stage of cancer.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in men globally. According to the world health organization (WHO), approximately 1.4 million new cases of prostate cancer were reported worldwide in 2020. Certain risk factors, such as age, family history of prostate cancer, ethnicity, and certain genetic mutations, can increase the likehood of developing prostate cancer.

As for cancer in general, I believe it is a complex disease that can arise from a combination of genetic, enviromental, and lifestyle factors. While the overall incidence of cancer has indeed increased over time, this can partly be attributed to population growth and the aging population. Additionally, advancments in medical technology and improved diagnostic techniques have also led to earlier detection of cancer cases.

Determining the exact causes of cancer can be challenging because it is influenced by multiple factors. Both human made such as ( tobacco use, exposure to certain chemicals, pollutants, certain medications), can have carcinogenic properties and contribute to the occurrence of cancer. On the other hand, natural compounds like certain toxins present in plants or fungi, can also be carcinogenic. Both human made and natural compounds can play a role in causing cancer.

I am lucky enough to say that I personally have never had to experience cancer, nor do i know anyone that has.

Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is common among men and affects the bones and lymph nodes of the patient. Even though prostate cancer is deadly, early detection can help in treatment of the illness. The common symptoms include urinary problems leading to changes in urinary habits (Merriel et al., 2018). For instance, patients experience frequent urination, difficulty starting and stopping urination, and blood in the urine or semen. The cancer can be treated using radical prostatectomy where the prostate gland and any affected lymph nodes and radiation therapy such as external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) where high energy x-rays are beamed at the prostate to destroy the affected cells. According to the National Cancer Institute (2020), prostate cancer has affected more than three million individuals in the United States. However, factors such as age, family history, and genetic factors have been found to influence the occurrence of prostate cancer among patients. Specifically, older men above 40 years old are more susceptible to prostate cancer (Mureithi et al., 2022). Studies have also shown that prostate cancer is more prevalent in North America, especially the U.S.

Cancer is among the most devastating group of diseases caused by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal body cells. It has profound impact on individuals and their families due to the physical, emotional, and financial damage it can subject the patients and their families. Controlling the various risk factors such as genetics, lifestyle choices, and environmental factors can help to mitigate the proliferation of cancer (Gnanapragasam et al., 2022). This is especially important since there are more cases in today’s society, due to exposure to carcinogens and lifestyle choices such as smoking. Carcinogens such as tobacco smoke and asbestos are more responsible for causing cancers, especially lung and throat cancer. I do have any personal experience of knowing someone with cancer, my mother died from lung cancer. The effects of cancer are profound due to the magnitude of damage the diseases cause. Individuals should consider avoiding lifestyle habits such as smoking that may encourage the development of cancerous cells.
