Diabetes and Drug Treatments

Brief explanation of the differences between the types of diabetes, including type 1, type 2, gestational, and juvenile diabetes.

Diabetes is a long-lasting (chronic) medical condition characterized by higher than normal blood sugar levels. There are different types of diabetes. Firstly, type 1 diabetes, also known as insulin dependent or juvenile diabetes, is a genetic disorder characterized by the pancreas producing too little insulin because an autoimmune reaction has occurred that destroyed beta cells that produce insulin in the pancreas. Secondly, type 2 diabetes is caused by diets and develops over time so that the body is unable to regulate and use glucose. Persons with this condition (type 2 diabetes) cannot properly take glucose from the foods they eat. Thirdly, gestational diabetes develops during pregnancy when the women reports high blood sugar levels. It can occur at any stage of the pregnancy and typically disappears at the end of the pregnancy (Moini, 2019).

An appropriate drug for type 2 diabetes is Nateglinide (Starlix®. It is a stimulator of insulin release as it increases insulin secretion from the pancreas. It was approved by the FDA in 2000. It is formulated in 120 mg as yellow tablets and 60 mg as pink tablets. The dosage is 120 mg taken three times daily. The dosage can be reduced to 60 mg taken three times daily if the blood sugar level is close to the treatment goal. The daily dosage ranges from 180 mg to 360 mg.  Diabetes and Drug Treatments Essay Example Paper Hypoglycemia is a possible side effect. It is safe for elderly patients with its duration of action being 2 hours. It is taken within 30 minutes of the meal (Kellerman & Rakel, 2020). Dietary considerations for type 2 diabetes include eating a balanced diet to help in managing blood sugar levels and weight as this helps to reduce diabetes complications such as stroke, heart disease and nerve damage. Nutrient dense foods should be eaten as they produce the minerals, minerals and fiber that the body needs. The foods should include beverages, heart healthy fats, protein rich foods, seeds, nuts, legumes, whole grains, vegetables and fruits (Hechtman, 2019).

Explain the short-term and long-term impact of this type of diabetes on patients. including effects of drug treatments.

The short-term impacts of type 2 diabetes on patients are hyperosmolar hyperglycemic nonketotic syndrome (HHNS – very high blood glucose) and hypoglycemia. Long-term impacts include macrovascular problems, diabetic neuropathy, nephropathy (kidney disease), and diabetic retinopathy (Tripathi & Saboo, 2019).
