In this module, you begin laying the foundation for your academic and professional success. Your efforts begin with a vision that includes your own definition of success. Your vision may vary from those of your colleagues, but this does not mean you have to take these first steps alone.
Walden University and the College of Nursing also have a vision and mission, which include helping you to make your own vision a reality. Members of your new academic community, such as faculty, support teams, and fellow students, can also be helpful. Current practitioners and other member of the professional community can also help you to clarify your vision.
This Module’s Discussion asks you to consider how the Walden mission and vision as well as the College of Nursing’s mission and vision apply to your professional and academic goals. You will also begin to identify individuals and teams who can help you along the way as you begin designing the “blueprint”—your Academic Success and Professional Development Plan—that will guide you toward your own vision for academic and professional success.

Nurs6003: Week 1 Discussion
My Goals and University Vision and Mission
My name is Nicole Everding, and nursing was not my first thought or path in life. I have a wide array of degrees and experiences; all of which have evolved and helped shape the nurse I have become, and am hoping to grow in to.
As a green nurse of only 3 years and over a decade with pharmacy experience, I have been leaning toward a role as a nurse in family practice. My professional goal is to work full-time in a clinic in Family nursing. To do so, I have needed to continually advance my degrees and gain more knowledge and experiences. I began looking into various schools that could provide me with the education and experience that I needed to obtain my degree in family medicine.
After researching and chatting with several schools, I have decided on Walden University. I appreciate that most of the coursework is available online and with shorter semesters. Additionally, the clinical and educational vision and mission statements of Walden’s seemed like a great fit. The nursing program meets and exceeds multiple accreditation standards and prepares their students to be ready to apply new knowledge and skills upon graduation, as expressed by Walden University (2020a). Having these skills and new knowledge from Walden University ready will allow to launch into the clinical world of family medicine.
Incorporation of Social Change
There are many ways to incorporate social change. Being able to change even the smallest thing can make such an impact in society. Dr. Herley, a Walden Graduate, explained how important Walden was in her educational goals, but how it helped her build her professional career, and in turn then help the community in which she felt most connected. She goes on to say,
While I was at Walden, it was the first time I ever heard the words social change agent. Certainly, being at Walden has inspired me to do a lot. Not too many people can say they are a doctor, and now I get a chance to do what I’ve always wanted to do, which is to help people. There is nothing more gratifying to me than knowing that I’ve changed someone’s life (2020b).
Though I may not be in her situation, I feel a strong pull to what she said about how gratifying it is to know I’ve changed someone’s life. That is the bottom line as to why I am continuing my education and advancing my career path. The healthcare field is ever changing, and I feel the need to spend more time face-to-face with our people and really listen to what they need, and then to do what I can with my knowledge and skills that I will gain from Walden University.
