Throughout history, complementary and alternative medicine has been used in place of conventional medicine. Now that we have conventional medicine people believe it is useless and cannot treat much. The more we advance, the more we could cause problems with one’s health using conventional medicine; with all of the side effects that can accompany today’s latest drugs they can do more harm than good. Complementary andalternative medicine will not cause as many problems as conventional medicine and can prevent diseases. Complementary means to “in addition to” or combining with something else. Complementary medicine works with conventional medicine trying to enhance and improve the patient’s health while staying safe with what a patient uses. As with many things, complementary and alternative medicine has changed throughout history and with this change has come new types of complementary and alternative medicine. The famous spiritual leader Mahatma Gandhi said, “Homeopathy cures a greater percentage of cases than any other method of treatment. Homeopathy is the latest, most refined method of treating patients economically and non-violently” (Malik). However, Homeopathy is only one of the many natural forms of treatment that patients are utilizing in an effort to avoid conventional medicine. I also surveyed to determine if there is a public desire for an Integrative Medicine practice model. I surveyed 35 people of all ages and genders, of which 21 admitted to experiencing negative side effects from taking various medications. Discussion Post Integrative Medicine Essay. Additionally, 19 were taking prescription medications for a chronic condition, of which 18 stated the symptoms returned after discontinuing their medicine, thus concluding the medicine simply masked the symptoms.
