Educational Technology Needs Assessment
According to Walker (2018), a technological needs assessment is a comprehensive analysis of specialized organizational needs while considering what is required today and the future needs based on the organization’s objectives. Technical requirements are essential for both small-scale and large-scale organizations. An educational needs assessment serves as a tool for highlighting the gaps in the current technology structure, allowing the adoption of new technology and identifying areas in an organization where technology is crucial (Pilcher, 2016). To comprehend the learning needs assessment, it is vital to note that performance in health care is continuously developing and changing. Therefore, nurse educators need to prioritize learning issues for their audience. This paper conducts an educational technology needs assessment to assess the needs for changes in existing educational technologies or the current use of that technology to improve nursing education in the healthcare setting.
Describe how nurses are currently using educational technology within a particular setting and academic context.
The advancement of technology in the world has increased its usage in nursing and educational settings. Additionally, the increased use and growing application of technology within an academic environment enable students to prepare to enter the workforce adequately. Nurse educators can apply various forms of technology such as simulation learning, mobile apps, and e-books. The nurses in the current setting are using technology to carry out multiple activities such as computerized recording of patients’ information through the Electronic Health Record (EHR) software. The software improves the accessibility of health care because it improves the clarity of medical records and makes data quickly accessible by various healthcare providers (Rathert et al., 2019). Due to the rapid character of the EHR, patient records need to be updated immediately after each visit to ensure accurate data.
The nurses in the setting sometimes forget to key in the information immediately after a visit, which creates problems when determining an efficient treatment plan. Nurses in the current hospital setting also apply telecommunication systems such as the mobile health app to offer care to patients who cannot access the hospital (Chang et al., 2018). The nurses, however, lack training in some best practices for nurses utilizing evidence-based research. However, the nurses in the current setting are not fully aware of the latest technologies used for conducting research, diagnosis, and treatment regimes. The lack of knowledge on the latest technologies for diagnosis and treatment bridges the gap of care between that particular hospital and other hospitals. The hospital also lacks an exact number of patients utilizing the mobile health app due to inconsistencies of patients in accessing telehealth services. Comparison
After utilizing the gap analysis to analyze the current state of technology use in the hospital, I realized only a few nurses are utilizing the available technologies such as Electronic Health Records. Also, most of the old registered nurses do not fully grasp how to offer health care services using the mobile health app. The nurses’ decreased knowledge and utilization of current technologies in the hospital decrease the quality and efficiency of care given to patients. The desired state of educational technology needs for the hospital is that all health care practitioners have adequate knowledge of the latest technology used for improving patient care in areas such as diagnosis and treatment. The hospital also desires all practitioners to adhere to strict implementation of electronic recording of patient data. Efficient training is required to close the gap of educational technology needs in the hospital.
Metrics Used to Determine the Benefits of Current Educational Technology Use
Utilizing technology to facilitate learning can bring tremendous advantages and assist in overcoming problems by improving access to learning materials anywhere and anytime (Pilcher, 2016). Proper planning and choosing suitable learning methodologies are vital to ensuring effective learning of fundamental nursing skills. It is also critical to select appropriate technologies that everybody can quickly adopt to facilitate quality interpretation and use of data. The matrices used to determine the benefits of educational use of technology includes; sustainability which means that students utilize the technology to improve students’ knowledge, overall presentation, and skills development.
Affordability is also matric used to determine the benefit of technology use, and it consists of budget allocation for the implementation of the technology. The organization also uses attainment of the end objective to measure the benefit of technology use in education. There are plenty of ways in which technology aids in improving performance and eventual achievement of the desired goal. For instance, simulation learning using both low and high-fidelity modeling equip learners with sufficient practical skill that helps them provide quality care. How New Educational Technology Aligns with the Strategic Mission of the Organization
The institution’s deliberate mission is to provide the highest quality of care to patients efficiently and equitably. An institution achieves quality care by applying appropriate technologies, consolidated research, education, and the best clinical practices. The new educational technology corresponds to the institution’s mission because it enables the hospital to effectively perform diagnoses, plan effective treatment regimens, and keep track of patients’ progress. The new education technology allows healthcare providers to access medical history and reduce errors when implementing treatment and care plans. Utilizing EHR and E-prescription of drugs enables smooth workflow that promotes quality services. Improving patients’ contentment of care is also key to ensuring the institutions’ mission.
Recommended Changes that will Improve Nursing Education
The adopted technology should provide accessible and sustainable performance for learning to improve nursing education. Conducting thorough training on the appropriate use of teaching technology ensures that every learner understands how to use and implement the available technology in their practices. Making sure that learners are acquainted with evidence-based research based on the latest technologies ensures they can quickly adapt and learn new teaching technologies. Adopting appropriate education technologies enables students and practitioners to identify strengths and weaknesses in their practice.
According to Chang et al (2018), mobile services in nursing provide students and registered nurses with immediate access to medicine references, medical history, and diagnoses, which eventually ensures quality services. Adopting game-based learning in a simulated setting will easily capture learners’ attention. It also motivates learners and nursing practitioners to develop critical thinking skills, innovation, and information reservation skills (Cant et al., 2017).
Nursing education continues to make significant benefits from incorporating technology into everyday learning, and this is a positive step towards ensuring competent and efficient nursing care for patients. Organizations should provide each student, and nurse practitioner understands the appropriate educational technologies through efficient training. It is, therefore, necessary for organizations to utilize the current educational technologies and research on the latest technologies that learners and institutions can adopt to facilitate improved performance.
