Elevator Speech Discussion Paper

Provide a 60 second “elevator speech” that includes the PICO question for your project and why you think it’s important to improve health care.
Have you thought about how to measure of the desired outcome for your project?
Can you anticipate any risks to participants in your project?
Thinking about what you learned about quality improvement through the Open Course IHI modules, can you talk about something you learned from the courses that you can relate to your SIP?

Elevator Speech

My name is ________ and I work as a nurse in a medical facility. My passion is to identify and address nursing care concerns through developing innovative solutions that leverage the available resources. Through working with non-pregnant female teenagers aged 13 to 19 years, I have noticed that they are not receptive to human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination although it is a recommended preventive measure. A review of available literature reveals that high HPV vaccine uptake is associated with a steep reduction in HPV occurrence among teenage girls. Elevator Speech Discussion Paper  Among the unvaccinated teenage girls, HPV prevalence was between 16.9% and 18.9% while among vaccinated teenage girls, HPV prevalence reduced from 18.6% to 2.1% (Halpern, 2016). Tung et al. (2016) explains that there is a need to improve HPV vaccination rates in order to prevent the morbidity and mortality associated with HPV-related disease among teenage girls as a high risk group.

The article specifically notes that the population of interest (teenage girls) have unfavorable attitudes towards HPV vaccine acceptance. Santhanes et al. (2018) explores a similar concern, and explains that intention to obtain the HPV vaccine can be improved by providing information about the vaccine and increasing awareness of the infection and vaccine. Given the presented information, the PICO question is presented that: “In non-pregnant female teens aged 12-19 who have not had HPV vaccine, does providing education to the parents and teens compare to the usual educational practice at the women’s health clinic increase knowledge of the risk factors and benefits of the injection to prevent cervical cancer?” Based on the PICO question, the desired outcomes of the project will be measured through evaluating changes in number of participants seeking HPV vaccination following the intervention. I expect that the results of the project will improve the health of teenage girls by improving HPV vaccine uptake.

PICO Worksheet and Search Strategy

  1. Define your question using PICO: Population, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcome.

Population: Non- pregnant female teenagers aged 12-19 years

Intervention: Educating parents and teens about HPV vaccine.

Comparison: The usual educational practice at the women’s health clinic

Outcome:   The education will have more teens accepting the injection at the WHC to prevent cervical cancer.

  1. Write out your question: In non-pregnant females teens aged 12-19 who have not had HPV vaccine, does providing education to the parents and teens compare to the usual educational practice at the women’s health clinic increase knowledge of the risk factors and benefits of the injection to prevent cervical cancer?
  2. List the main topics and terms from your question that you can use to search.

Gardasil injection, Cervical cancer, HPV vaccine, Cervical cancer prevention, cervical cancer prevalence

  1. Check any limit that may pertain to your search:

Age 5  Years; Language English; Year of publication from 2016

  1. Type of study/publication you want to include in your search: (From Step 2 of tutorial)
