Ethics Pattern of Knowing
Carper (1978) described four knowledge patterns that support different nursing roles. One of these patterns is ethics, the component: ethics pattern facilitates the development of moral knowledge in nursing. Ethics pattern of knowing involves deliberate actions regarding what is wrong and right; encompassing judgment of moral value regarding intention and character traits. Nursing actions aim to achieve specific nursing goals and on some occasions, the norms and principles associated in making such choices may conflict forcing a nurse to make a moral choice (Carper, 1978). Therefore, this paper will discuss the application of ethics pattern of knowing in developing knowledge for psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner role (PMHNPs). Discussion
Psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners make various moral choices on care provision, treatment, and health promotion. Therefore, ethics pattern of knowing can be applied to develop knowledge by creating learning strategies that enable PMHNPs to analyze clinical situations that make them to effectively handle ethical-moral decision making. This is because PMHNPs encounter various experiences that need them to make moral judgments and make ethical decisions (Escobar-Castellanos & Sanhueza-Alvarado, 2017). In a mental health setting, the ethical pattern of knowledge is allied to difficult choices to be made regarding what is wrong and right; therefore, PMHNPs need to understand various ethical positions regarding what is good and the appropriate action to take (Carper, 1978).
A PHMNP may provide care based on the moral conditions while ignoring the empirical knowledge. For example, a study conducted by Oliveira et al (2017) shows a PHMNP using affection and word as care strategies and using shouts to expedite the patient’s understanding during care when the patient is in crisis; by doing this, the PHMNP believes that the patient will calm down. In such a case, the nurse uses moral knowledge to handle the situation. Another example is where a PHMNP would remain with the client providing care even when their shift has come to an end because such an action is what is morally right.
Ethical commitments involving the complexity of moral judgments require a correct understanding regarding what is good and correct for patients; this way, a PHMNP is able to make the morally correct action (Oliveira et al, 2017). For example, after an intervention, the nurse may return to assess the patient’s progress due to the ethical commitment and not out of duty. In addition, a PHMNP may use moral judgment to establish whether a psychiatric patient will need a restraint.
Developing ethical knowledge for PHMNP is about valuing, clarification and advocacy. Clarification and valuing are the foundation of personal ethics after a nurse develops various ethical positions (Oliveira et al, 2017). A PHMNP should act as the patient’s advocate through the process of valuing, clarification and advocacy. Dialogue is needed when analyzing an ethical decision. In conclusion, the process of ethical knowing for a PHMNP, for instance, patient advocacy and clarifying life meaning has the potential to change other healthcare values (Escobar-Castellanos & Sanhueza-Alvarado, 2017). Ethics pattern of knowing aids in developing moral knowledge which helps nurses to make decisions regarding what is wrong and right. Ethical dilemmas provide PMHNPs with the opportunity to analyze clinical situations and hence they gain knowledge on how to effectively handle ethical-moral decision making. Ethical commitments also necessitate a PHMNP to make a moral judgment and perform the morally correct action. Finally, in order to be competent patient’s advocates, PHMNP needs to have moral knowledge and be cognizant of the appropriate ethical position to take.

10% Format – Consistently use APA format (6th edition) and correct English grammar across these papers, from the title page through the reference list. These papers must adhere to the following guidelines (all of which are in agreement with APA, 6th ed., format), as well as the other guidelines specified in the APA Manual (6th ed.): (a) be typed in a current version of Microsoft Word that can be opened by the course faculty; (b) be typed in Times New Roman typeface, with 12-point font size; (c) have double spacing between all lines, including the title page and reference list; (d) have 1-1½ inch margins (top, bottom, right, and left); (e) include a title page and reference page; (f) have headings between sections; and (g) have a running head and page numbers.
Grading Rubric for Papers 1-4
The points for the first three criteria for Papers 1-4 are based on the level of achievement in terms of clarity, thoroughness, evidence of reading professional literature (as applicable to the criteria), and critical thinking and synthesis related to the specific focus of the criteria paper.
