Healthcare as a Privilege

Although health care is a human need required for survival, it would not be considered a right. Rather, it would be considered a privilege. If health care were considered a right, then the law would make such an indication with the government enforcing such a law. If health care were considered a moral right, then every person would have access to health care regardless of whether the law offers universal access to health care since a moral right exists as a requirement of justice. On the other hand, if health care is a privilege but not a right, then there is nothing wrong with some members of the population being denied access to health care. This includes the government that can either choose to provide or not provide health care if it is a privilege. Healthcare as a Privilege Discussion Paper

In such a case (when health care is a privilege), it might be efficient or look good for the government to provide health care, but justice would not require that the government provide health care (Raingruber, 2017). There are two reasons advanced to show that health care is a privilege and not a right. Firstly, if health care were a right then patients would not have to pay for health care. Someone must pay for health care, either the tax payer or medical personnel or medical organizations. These parties have no such duty to pay for health are as they are not slaves. Patients must pay for their own health care thus making it a privilege. Secondly, the right to health care is simply unfeasible. If there was such a right, then every person would access health care and this creates a problem since it is too expensive to provide quality health care services (McEwen & Wills, 2018). Overall, it becomes clear that health care is a privilege.
