Implementation Model for Evidence Based Practice

Overview of the model

Stetler Model is targeted at enabling medical practitioners to evaluate how evidence from research findings and other pertinent sources can be applied in clinical practice. It examines how evidence can be applied to create change that promotes patient-centered care delivery. The model is applied in five phases. The first phase is preparation, which involves identifying a need for change, purpose of the change, context in which the change occurs, and evidence to support the change. The second phase is validation, which involves evaluating the evidence for quality and level to determine the sources that have merit and fit the proposed change, and whether or not a piece of evidence should be rejected or accepted in relation to the purpose of the change. This is intended to identify the evidence that is feasible and acceptable. The fourth phase is application/translation, which involves applying the evidence and findings into practice. The final phase is evaluation, which involves comparing the actual outcomes with the expected outcomes to assess success (Stetler, 2001).

Pros or advantages of the model

Stetler Model presents five advantages. Firstly, it can be used by a single practitioner and can also be used by a group of practitioners without having to involve the whole organization. Secondly, it allows for the evidence to be categorized thereby assigning real value for the organization. Thirdly, it applies a logical approach that reduces opportunities for errors in decision making. Fourthly, it promotes the use of evidence. Finally, it encourages critical thinking (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019).

Cons or challenges of the model

Stetler Model presents two disadvantages. Lack of skills and knowledge pertaining to evidence-informed practice and research use could inhibit appropriate and effective use of the model. Secondly, it requires a supportive context that includes organizational resources (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019).
