Healthcare is becoming more complicated, necessitating the ability to respond to shifting demands. Nursing relies heavily on teamwork to provide high-quality care (Anderson et al., 2019). In the case study, Kim is employed in a cardiology ward and is working in general medical, and she is a registered nurse in a renowned healthcare institution. Bronwyn works at the same institution, and she is the team leader. Alex is an experienced enrolled nurse. Alex and Kim have worked together before, and Alex feels slightly intimidated by Kim. Kim and Alex are caring for patients. Bronwyn explains handover jargon and difficult acronyms to Kim in a generous manner. Kim informs that a cardiology clinical nurse consultant and a graduate nurse educator are present at the healthcare institution and available till 5 pm. Alex has taken charge of caring for the patients in the four-bed bay and informs Kim that she has been allocated the single rooms. She further informs that she does not need any help or supervision as she almost registered herself. The service users in rooms 1 to 5 will be taken care of by Alex and Kim. Kim has never reconstituted Flolan. She is in room 2, aware of the method, which states that stopping the infusion may result in death. One of the registered nurses on the roster has been recognized as a COVID close contact. Therefore, the ward is understaffed. This paper aims to discuss the roles of the nurses in providing care for 8 patients in the case study, with special emphasis on the responsibilities and roles of nursing professionals. The roles of the nurses in providing care for the patients, like providing supervision, delegation, and prioritizing the responsibilities, will also be discussed in the paper (LaCharity, Kumagai & Hosler, 2022). Safe and top-quality care will be provided to the patients based on the NMBA standards of nursing practice, and it will be discussed in the paper as well. Critical appraisal of nursing leadership and the role of nurses in clinical settingsNurses always try to provide high-quality care to the patients associated with other healthcare professionals (Aquilia et al., 2020). Skilled nurses develop care programs and can evaluate nursing practices. The performance of the nurses enhances patient outcomes and the overall efficacy of healthcare institutions (Lyman, Gunn & Mendon, 2020). Nursing leadership is crucial in motivating and influencing healthcare professionals to deliver appropriate and high-quality care to the patients while working together to achieve their goals. Nurse leaders provide professional development staff training (Hofmeyer & Taylor, 2021). The nurse leaders ensure that all the established nursing procedures and guidelines are followed properly, patient safety is maintained, and good care is received. Decision-making, critical thinking, and advocacy are all included in clinical nursing leadership (Pearson, 2020). An efficient nurse leader would incorporate proper and healthy balance in the management of patients. The nurses’ leaders supervise all of the units of the healthcare institution and ensure that the appropriate procedures and standards are followed for providing high-quality treatment (World Health Organization, 2018). The nurses set practical objectives for the best possible outcomes for the patients.
Analysis of the registered nurses’ leadership roles in prioritizing care
Registered nurses’ key leadership responsibilities and roles are promoting patients’ well-being and health, minimizing medical costs, assessing patients’ diagnostic procedures and charts, minimizing staff turnover, safeguarding patients from legal problems, and delivering patient-centric care (Coster, Watkins & Norman, 2018). For identifying and resolving front-line nurses’ issues and concerns, nurse leaders must establish empathic interactions with them (Hofmeyer & Taylor, 2021). In the case scenario, the team leader Bronwyn can be seen explaining handover jargon and difficult acronyms to Kim in a generous manner. It can be seen that the registered nurses assessed each patient’s condition and provided appropriate treatment based on the severity of the issue. A delegation plan involving the nurse educator and clinical nurse consultant has been recommended (Saunders, 2021). The strategy has been formulated based on the patients’ top priorities. Thus, nursing leadership roles in prioritizing care can be seen in the case scenario.
Application of the elements of NMBA relevant to the role of registered nursesThe functions of NMBA involve formulating standards and guidelines for nurses. It also handles complaints, notifications, disciplinary hearings, and investigations (NMBA, 2022). Certain standards are there that pertain to NMBA. Standard 1 of NMBA states that registered nurses utilize the best available evidence and several thinking strategies while making decisions and delivering quality and safe nursing practice with evidence-based and person-centered frameworks. Standard 2 states that registered nurses engage in professional and therapeutic relationships. As per standard 3, registered nurses are accountable and responsible for ensuring the safety of the patients. Standard 4 states that registered nurses conduct systematic and comprehensive evaluations appropriately and accurately. As per standard 5, nurses are accountable for the communication and planning of nursing practice. Standard 6 states that nurses must deliver proper, safe, and responsive quality practice for achieving agreed goals. As per standard 7, nurses assess the patients’ outcomes (NMBA, 2022).
Depending on case severity, the nursing leaders suggest appropriate treatment for the patients. For managing a patient, a delegation plan is suggested that includes a clinical consultant and a graduate nurse educator and delivers medicine at the proper time (Thibault et al., 2020). Along with appropriate management standards, the appropriate delegation must also be maintained. Kim, a registered nurse, does not have much knowledge regarding Flolan reconstitution and infusion. Bronwyn, the team leader, has to be informed about this, as Kim needs education and training on such issues, which could otherwise have disastrous consequences for Maxine. At 3 pm, Glenda Turkey in room 4 needs 40 mg of IV frusemide. At 5 pm, Roy Oceans in room 1 needs assistance with medicine refills. Room number 3’s patient is supposed to be monitored continuously for fifteen minutes.
A registered nurse must be assigned by the team leader to the bay bed. Two patients in the bayside room need priority treatment. One of them is Liam Duck, who requires medical assistance by 3 pm, and another person is Athena Swann, who needs medical assistance by 4 pm. The nurse educator, together with Alex, must be assigned to the single room for managing and providing timely treatment. Reinfusion of flolan, which must be delivered with the assistance of a nurse educator, is a priority for the treatment of patients in single rooms. For delivering care to room number 5’s patients, the nurses must engage nurse educators in their efforts. A cardiac nurse consultant will assist room number 3’s patients in examining the limb and groin. The bayside room’s enrolled nurse requires medical assistance as Liam Duck must be moved for medical imaging at 3 pm for a chest X-ray. By 5 pm, room number 4’s registered nurse should have given frusemide and the second dose. Athena Swann requires 15 minutes of surveillance and monitoring for her groin and limb. The team leader can seek help from the educator and healthcare manager for handling the patients, but they are understaffed.
As Kim has minimal knowledge of how to administer an infusion and reconstitute flolan, Kim can get assistance from the nurse educator in that case in administering flolan and presenting other pertinent theories for reducing pulmonary hypertension complications. In room number 4, the registered nurse can then be told to administer the medication’s second dose. Following that, constant monitoring of groin and limb for about fifteen minutes and a vital signs check can be performed. For one hour, the cardiac nurse should be present in room number 3 to monitor the patient’s status. At 5 pm, the registered nurse can assist in administering patients’ medication. Liam Duck, who is being moved to the medical imaging ward, can be given priority by the enrolled nurse. After the transfer, for the first fifteen minutes, the enrolled nurse must also monitor the patient’s status who is experiencing pain in the limb and groin. Madison Goose requires the appointment of clinical or healthcare leaders. Peter Finch needs appropriate and efficient assistance to cope with his discomfort and manage the issue. After each inspection, the registered nurse should verify the handover procedure to see any issues with the treatment or any medical errors (Arumugam, Ahmad & Yusof, 2021). The two consultants’ delegation action must be prescribed to patients following the NMBA’s guidelines (NMBA, 2022). The registered nurses in the rooms should dispense the drug because only after completing a medical course an enrolled nurse can perform it.
Conclusion
Therefore, from the above discussion, it can be established that nursing leadership is a critical and vital aspect in bringing out the best in the nurses and creating a positive environment to offer high-quality patient care. Nurse leaders play a pivotal role in coordinating the service users and the staff to build sustainable patient success. They also create professional values, regulations, and instructions for dealing with customer complaints and comments about the industry. In terms of the NMBA, several standards are available. The leader must examine each person’s condition and provide appropriate treatment based on the seriousness of the problem. A delegation strategy comprising the clinical nurse consultant and the graduate nurse educator would be advised to deliver proper treatment and administer the drug at the right time. The delegation plan for this task is based on the patients’ top priorities.
