Influence of Consensus Model for APRN
The consensus mode for APRN standardizes APRN across the USA with the intention of improving access to professionals and access to care. The model harnesses the potential of standardization by outlining regulatory requirements in education, certification, accreditation and licensure that should be adopted by every state in the USA so that uniformity in APRN role is achieved (National Council of State Boards of Nursing, 2020). The model has had a profound effect. Firstly, it has united national certification organization, state boards of nursing, and nursing program in their definition of APRN roles so that nurses who seek to practice as APRN face the same standards irrespective of state. This includes applications for licensure and certification, and education. This has ensured that APRN now face fewer barriers that interfered with their ability to practice to the full extent of their training even when they move across state lines. Secondly, it has defined the role of APRN through identifying the four categories of practice that include certified nurse midwives (CNMs), certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs), clinical nurse specialists (CNSs), and nurse practitioners (NPs). The four practice categories have helped in established population focus for practice so that certification and licensure requirements are structured for the specific professional role expectations. Thirdly, it has established educational requirements for licensure and certification, specifying the clinical experience and classes that must be completed in each education program. Finally, the model has consolidated updated, and streamlined certification options (Online FNP Programs, 2020). Overall, the model has clarified the role of APRN, ensured that they receive sufficient training the ensure the safety of patients, and established standards that reaffirm the qualifications of APRN to independently serve patients across the USA.
