Reflection

The program equipped students with theoretical and practical knowledge of diagnostic principles, thus facilitating their role in medical facilities as a family nurse practitioner addressing the healthcare needs of individuals of all age groups. While this program was broad, this paper will reflect on how the achievement of the course outcomes has prepared me to meet the MSN program outcome. It will discuss how the professional values can be integrated through scholarship and service in health care, nurse practitioner core competency, and master’s essential IV.Integrate professional values through scholarship and service in health care.

Program Outcome #4: Integrate professional values through scholarship and service in health care.

I learned how to integrate professional values through scholarship and service in health care. In particular, I attained the program’s outcome of professional identity in this program through an analysis of the organization of primary care practice and how it is influenced by various external forces, including legal, ethical, economic, and political factors (Poorchangizi et al., 2017). I managed to integrate professional values during the course through the evaluation of clinical cases and research. This analysis resulted in the development of my professional identity as a family nurse practitioner (FNP). I learned the professional core values of a nurse practitioner in theory and practice. The further development of my identity as an FNP and professionalism was facilitated by the integration of various professional core values such as trustworthiness, compassion, and accountability in clinical practice.Integrate professional values through scholarship and service in health care.

First, I was exposed to this outcome when I was handling a female client who was diagnosed with bulimia nervosa disorder during my clinical rotation. I noticed that the client was extremely anxious about her condition. She was concern about her eating habits, body image, and complexion.Integrate professional values through scholarship and service in health care. I allowed her to express her emotions and feelings. I was compassionate throughout the session despite experiencing challenges associated with a time-constraint environment where the interview was conducted. After a lengthy discussion, I enquired about her treatment plans. I ensure that trust and respect were developed at the beginning of the therapy. This, in turn, facilitated the establishment of rapport between me and the client. The client was willing to open up and express all her concerns due to a good relationship. Consequently, I was able to address her health needs based on the presented information.Integrate professional values through scholarship and service in health care.

Secondly, I achieved this particular outcome during the implementation of treatment plans for patients who were struggling to access proper services in healthcare organizations. I attended to a patient with multiple comorbidities during my clinical rotations. The chief complaint that was presented by the client was constipation. Bile duct cancer was detected through imaging. It was relatively hard for the patient to get an evaluation appointment with an oncologist. Instead, the client was given another appointment, thus it would take a relatively long period before the patient’s issue was addressed. We contacted another oncologist and urged her to give the patient an appointment in a few days. More so, we counseled the patient to support her psychologically.Integrate professional values through scholarship and service in health care.

Master’s Essential IV: Transforming and incorporating scholarship into practice

Various practices, including interdisciplinary team participation, application of research outcomes in a healthcare setting, dissemination of study results, and the implementation of practice guidelines to boost health outcomes facilitated the achievement of the Master’s Essential IV of transforming and incorporating scholarship into practice during this program. Integrate professional values through scholarship and service in health care.Specifically, master’s essential was emphasized throughout this program using reliable sources of information, application of national guidelines, and the incorporation of clinical judgment and aspects of other professionals in developing treatment plans for multiple illnesses. For instance, we applied various evidence-based clinical guidelines to assist in the development of treatment plans for different patients in-class discussion posts. Additionally, we discussed case studies of various illnesses throughout the course. Integrate professional values through scholarship and service in health care.We supported the presented claims with the latest recommendations of scholarly articles and national treatment guidelines provided by governmental agencies and healthcare associations. The incorporation of scholarship into the clinical practices was facilitated by the application of practice guidelines. Also, one of the examples provided in week 6 enhanced the fulfillment of the master’s essential. We were discussing a case about mental health disorder. Moreover, we discussed different mental health disorders and supported our views with credible and reliable sources provided at the beginning of the course. My knowledge was also improved by responding to questions that were raised by peers regarding mental health disorders. Integrate professional values through scholarship and service in health care.

Nurse Practitioner Core Competency #7: Health Delivery System Competencies

The last nurse practitioner core competency #7 concentrates on the competencies associated with health delivery systems. This competency was launched by the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF).Integrate professional values through scholarship and service in health care. It involves the application of knowledge and skills that students acquire from various activities, including supporting healthcare needs of culturally diverse populations, taking part in organizational practices, participating in implementing healthcare change and collaborating with other professionals in the continuity of care. Integrating cultural competence into primary care practices and supporting continuity of care facilitated the achievement of this competency in my clinical rotation.Integrate professional values through scholarship and service in health care.

For instance, I encountered an elderly male client who had experienced hematuria intermittently for the previous three weeks in the clinical rotation. Integrate professional values through scholarship and service in health care. The patient had not visited primary care providers for years. We developed a treatment plan for the patient based on the presented symptoms. First, we obtained a urine sample from the patient and conducted some tests. The results indicated frank blood. Consequently, we recommended a higher level of care for the patient. We referred the patient to the nearest ER for further treatment. We provided the heartcare facility with the client’s details, including health history, the presented symptoms, and results of the conducted tests. The case was declared an emergency and it was given immediate attention. Further evaluation was scheduled to confirm the client’s condition. Interprofessional collaboration and proper planning for transitions of patient care across the healthcare organizations were evident in this example.Integrate professional values through scholarship and service in health care.

Secondly, this competence was achieved through cultural competence in a healthcare organization. I encountered a young Hispanic female patient in the clinical rotation. The client was struggling with an eating disorder and depression. She was accompanied by her mother to the medical center.Integrate professional values through scholarship and service in health care. A communication barrier would have hindered the provision of quality and safe care since both of them spoke Spanish. Consequently, a Hispanic was involved as an interpreter to facilitate the visitation. Additionally, we utilized the services of an interpreter in developing an appropriate treatment plan for the client. More so, an interpreter was involved to facilitate the discussion of the client’s emotions. Integrate professional values through scholarship and service in health care.Culturally competent care aims at providing the highest quality of care to individual patients irrespective of their ethnicity and cultural background. The patient and her mother were thankful to us for addressing their concerns effectively. The healthcare needs of culturally diverse groups were demonstrated in this example. Thus, I was prepared to meet the master’s Essential IV competence by the accomplishment of the outcomes in this course.Integrate professional values through scholarship and service in health care.
