As part of the literature selection process, you should summarize each article, synthesize key elements and discuss how it impacts with and intersects with your chosen topic. You should also locate literature that suggests research that you are proposing, though this is not required.

Applying Emotional Intelligence Skills to Leadership and Decision Making in Non-Profit Organizations
Purpose Statement
The purpose of this study is to investigate how leaders within non-profit organizations apply emotional intelligence skills during the leadership and decision-making process. Emotional intelligence is an essential component of leadership because leaders require emotional intelligence to make effective everyday decisions (Mehdi et al, 2013). Evidence shows that emotions play a significant role in decision-making where positive emotions cultivate creativity as well as decision-making skills while negative emotions can result in poor decision-making (Sumathy et al, 2015). Practically, decision-making among leaders is not only influenced by logical thinking but also emotions and feelings (Kumar, 2014). Emotional intelligence, therefore, influences decision making for leaders. 20 organizational leaders will be interviewed to identify their leadership practices and decision-making process and how the leaders apply emotional intelligence in these leadership aspects. Emotional intelligence has been studied widely but little has been studied regarding how behaviors allied to emotional intelligence may be used as a lens to understand decision-making within the non-profit setting (Srivastava, 2013). This study will generate knowledge regarding emotional intelligence and its relationship with other leadership skills and organizational variables within non-profit organizations where leaders need a wide spectrum of leadership skills.
Specifically, this study will examine various components of emotional intelligence, namely; adaptability; stress management; self-awareness; empathy; flexibility; optimism; stress tolerance; and self-regulation in relation to decision-making and leadership skills (Holm, 2018).
Research Questions
Research Method
The study will employ a qualitative, descriptive research design where the data will be collected using in-depth interviewing of the 20 leaders guided research questions. The research questions will be refined during data collection. Sutton & Austin (2015) explain that qualitative research design allows observation of study participants and therefore research can get more involved with the experiences of the study participants.
The population will be selected through purposeful sampling where all study participants will be individuals working in non-profit organizations serving various different roles. The sample will include 20 existing leaders (senior managers and managers of intermediate departments) in the selected non-profit organizations. The study will be specific to the current leaders at the selected organizations. The study will exclude leaders who have served for less than 3 years. Participation will be entirely voluntary and study participants will have the liberty to withdraw from the study at any time. Individuals holding a bachelor’s degree in different leadership and management fields will be represented in the sample.
After the approval of the study, the 20 leaders in the selected organizations will be contacted through the e-mail t request their participation in this study. After the email, phone contact will be made with each leader in order to obtain their verbal consent to take part in the study.
The leadership and decision-making competencies of the 20 leaders will be measured with Goleman’s leadership competency framework. The framework consists of five components of emotional intelligence and 25 emotional competencies. Study participants will be requested to examine their leadership and decision-making practices in regard to the set requirements. Data will be collected through interviews and interview data collection method will allow an in-depth analysis of how leaders perceive their leadership skills and decision-making process in relation to emotional intelligence competencies. Data will also be collected by completing the demographic questionnaire. All the 20 interviews will be performed within 3 weeks period and each interview is expected to last between 30-45 minutes. The interviews will be tape-recorded with permission from every study participant. Interview questions will be guided by the research questions.
Data analysis from this study will be performed according to the recurrent themes as divulged during field notes, field observations, as well as data collection. Information parts and phrases having similar information will be classified and coded in different themes. Analysis of themes will be done in relation to the minimum leadership and decision-making competency requirements for managers and leaders to the Goleman’s emotional intelligence competencies (Livesey, 2017). Review of the interview questions will be done by peers and experts. Verbatim transcriptions will be done in chronological order within two weeks after interview completion. Review of the transcripts will be performed to confirm their accuracy.
Permission will be sought from relevant ethical bodies before starting the study. Informed consent will also be sought from all the study participants before they were enrolled in the study. In addition, all the study participants will be assured of the confidentiality of their information and only authorized parties will be able to access the research information. The anonymity of all study participants will be maintained (Sanjari et al, 2014).
