The application of ever-evolving technology and healthcare is fascinating to watch. Within the last two years, healthcare workers have seen the evolution of Telehealth services “receive a boost with the COVID-19 pandemic” (McGonigal & Mastrian, 2022, p. 618). This service is now more popular than ever before due to the necessity of patients to receive routine medical care or assistance in an easier and more timely manner. This is but one example in the vast sea of medical technology developments made possible through nursing informatics.

Cell phones and “smartphones” are another use of technology and nursing informatics collaborating to facilitate greater quality of care. Nearly every adult in the United States owns a cell phone and almost seems to be a necessity today. Smartphones, in particular, have a spectrum of utility that can be applied to enhance health information technology and overall wellbeing. Mobile health applications and simple provider-to-patient communication “offers ways to improve the quality, efficacy, and safety of healthcare delivery, and contribute significantly to productivity within healthcare settings” (Alexander et al., 2018, p. 210). Organizations, like the Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) Healthcare, have begun utilizing smartphones for provider use and integrating with electronic health record (EHR) systems.

According to my knowledge, I have not personally had any interactions or experiences with nurse informaticists or technology specialists while employed with HCA. However, this does not mean that I have not been affected by the changes made by them. At my facility, we have iMobiles that assist the providers, nurses, and other workers to communicate easily through phone or text messaging. The iMobiles have been updated recently with the application “PatientKeeper,” which has been enhancing patient care. This application provides a patients EHR quickly and is mobile without the need to log into our EHR system, Meditech. I personally have been able to educate patients on medications they are prescribed away from a computer because PatientKeeper allows users to access medication lists, lab results, vital signs, and close to every aspect of the patient’s EHR. HCA’s South Atlantic Division has time comparison results comparing the ease of access of the patient’s EHR using PatientKeeper and Meditech (HCA Healthcare, n.d.). This is meant to provide support and increase provider’s workflow with patient care, and I have noticed a difference when I learned and applied this resource to my nursing care INTERACTION BETWEEN NURSE INFORMATICISTS AND OTHER SPECIALISTS NURS-6051N Module 2: Week 3: Discussion .

One suggestion I have regarding this application introduction is a formal training, either mandatory or electively. When PatientKeeper was introduced to my facility, I was given a clipboard from the charge nurse giving the shift report with a paper walkthrough of the application. This was the extent of the announcement and encouragement to use this resource. I needed to delve into the application myself with no guide to assist. I have not seen many of my colleagues use PatientKeeper, and I believe it is due to the lack of training of how to utilize it.

Nursing informatics and the changes of technology have increased the professional interactions healthcare providers have between other providers and patients alike, but there are some drawbacks. Some providers rely so much on technology that they forget to “care” for the patient as they provide the healthcare. Providers using technology can feel apathetic and uncaring towards the patient, creating a decrease in patient satisfaction and outcomes. As McGonigal and Mastrian stated (2022), “We must be fully present and self-aware in every patient encounter, seeking to deliver exactly what is needed in every situation” (p. 599). Remembering to “care” for the patient increases the nurse’s ability to integrate nursing informatics, technology, and patient involvement to provide the greatest patient care possible.
