Composition of interprofessional team
An interprofessional team refers to the means by which different health care professions with diverse talents, skills and knowledge work together in collaboration to achieve a common goal. An interprofessional team is built around the idea of achieving a common goal with each member have clear roles and contributions. Besides that, the development of an effective and efficient team requires appreciation of diversity in terms of thinking, culture and generation, engagement of all the team members, effectiveness, clear and open communication, and representativeness of the different health care professions (Weiss, Tappen & Grimley, 2019).
Differentiate between cooperation and collaboration
The concepts of cooperation and collaboration in interprofessional teams are similar but have subtle differences. Cooperation focuses on working together to achieve a shared goal. This implies that while the cooperating parties may have different roles and responsibilities, they all solely focus on the shared goal. For instance, medical personnel can cooperate to ensure that a disease is eliminated and the patient gets well. The personal goals may differ, but they can intersect to result in a shared goal that requires collaboration. For instance, medical personnel and patients can collaborate in health care delivery since they have different personal goals but a shared goal of ensuring the patient gets well (Weiss, Tappen & Grimley, 2019).
How does collaboration promote patient safety?
Collaboration promotes patient safety by allowing interprofesional teams to partner with patients and family members in participatory collaborative and coordinated approaches that allow for shared decision making around health care issues. This allows for a synergistic influence of the grouped skills and knowledge with a focus on shared decision-making and communication. Elements of collaboration include mutual respect and trust, autonomy, assertiveness, cooperation, communication, coordination, accountability and responsibility. These elements are important for improving patient safety outcomes as they blend the professional cultures to improve care quality (Beauvais, 2018).
What is the role of the nurse leader in ensuring interprofessional teamwork and collaboration and conflict resolution?
The nurse leader is responsible for applying conflict management skills in terms of providing guidance and direction towards ensuring that the team performs optimally and all conflicts are resolved. In fact, the leader is responsible for building a team that can work well together and helping set the tone for how the team should perform. Overall, nurse leaders need to response with action that is required in the situation with a focus on ensuring that the team performs efficiently and effectively in achieving its goals (Beauvais, 2018).
