Leadership has traditionally been associated with the formal roles that are defined in terms of interactive processes in which an individual motivates and empowers others to accomplish specific goals. However, a more comprehensive definition of leadership in nursing recognizes that informal leadership roles exist in the clinical areas and bedside where nurses instruct patients and other medical personnel. As such, it is important for nurses to have leadership skills as they would require them in the provision of professional nursing services whether in the formal or informal roles (McEwen & Wills, 2018). The present paper discusses leadership from the personal perspective.

A description of your core values

My personal core values have been important in helping me to focus and align my life choices. They are consistent with my core beliefs, mission and vision, are inspirational, are unique, provide guidance in decision-making, are long lasting, and are meaningful and rewarding. The first core value is respect to include cherishing and valuing relationships, appreciation and esteem. The second core value is perseverance to include determination and persistence when tackling activities and projects. This includes not giving up until the objective is achieved or until it becomes clear that it cannot be achieved as intended. The third core value is happiness by being glad, delighted, blissful, contented and joyful, and taking pleasure in professional and personal activities (Zaccagnini & White, 2017). A personal mission/vision statement

My vision is to positively contribute towards a world where every person contributes with his/her full potential, where every person uses leadership and intrinsic genius to delivery outstanding value-added tasks. This is my optimal desired future state of what I hope to achieve over the next twenty years, describing a realistic, engaging and clear future. This vision inspires me to give my best and shapes my understanding of why I am actively pursuing a professional nursing career. The vision is aligned with my values.

An analysis of your CliftonStrengths Assessment summarizing the results of your profile

A Clifton strength assessment was conducted to evaluate personal leadership profile. A review of the profile results reveals five significant leadership themes that identified my strongest natural talents as a leader. The first theme is futuristic, an indication that I am inspired by my view of the future and what can be achieved. I use my view of the future to energize others to put effort into achieving my ideal future. The second theme is ideation, an indication that I am fascinated by new ideas and exceptionally talented at linking new ideas to develop uncomplicated philosophies and concepts. The third theme is connectedness, an indication that I have strong faith in links, both within the personal and professional environment. Although there are mysteries in life, there are no real coincidences as every even has meaning that can be discovered with the right approach. We are all part of something larger and whatever effort an individual makes, it would either negatively or positively contribute to the effort made by others. The fourth theme is empathy, an indication that I am sensitive to the feelings of the people around me. I am attuned to the feelings and emotions of others, and intuitively try to share the perspectives of others even as I see the world through their eyes. The fifth theme is communication, an indication that I find it easy to put thoughts into words as I am a good presenter and conversationalist (Gallup, 2020).

A description of two key behaviors that you wish to strengthen

A review of my leadership profile reveals that although I am good at empathy and communication as important leadership qualities, I would like to strengthen these behaviors in order to improve my abilities as a leader. Firstly, I am empathetic and can sense the emotions and feelings of the persons around me. However, I find that this is sometimes overwhelming as I am unable to filter the emotions and feelings to identify the important ones. Strengthening this behavior would give me the ability to filter the perspectives of others so that I am not overwhelmed. Secondly, I am a communicator who is able to put my thoughts into words although this ability is limited by cultural awareness. I am comfortable communicating with some cultures as I understand their peculiarities. This is a shortcoming in this increasingly globalized health care environment where meeting new cultures is a regular occurrence (Clifton & Anderson, 2016).

A development plan that explains how you plan to improve upon the two key behaviors you selected and an explanation of how you plan to achieve your personal vision.

I intend to improve the two behaviors through two strategies. The first strategy is attending formal leadership training that would enable me acquire and develop new empathy and communication skills that are tailored for leadership in the nursing professional environment. The second strategy is engaging in mentorship where I shadow leaders with the right qualities that I would wish to emulate. Through observing these leaders in practice, I would be able to strengthen the two behaviors (Clifton & Anderson, 2016).
