There are four levels of theoretical thinking in nursing that are based on the generalizations of principles: micro-range theory, middle-range theory, grand theory, and meta-theory. A micro-range theory is a practice theory that explore a specific nursing situation as found in practice through identifying explicit objectives and details on how they would be achieved. Classifying nursing theories based on the four levels is important to understanding their philosophical underpinnings, purpose, abstractness, scope and range. The four levels help in organizing nursing theories into a systematic, purposeful view of phenomenon that lends itself to rigorous and creative structuring of ideas (Murphy, 2020). In addition, the classification helps in categorizing knowledge so that nurses are better able to develop theories that evaluate increasingly complex situations in the practice environment. As new nursing situations emerge, the classification systems help by providing a decision-making, investigation and management arrangement (McEwen & Willis, 2018).
