Analyze new technologies and virtual environments that foster innovative home care technologies to monitor and self-manage co-morbid chronic health conditions.
Self-management of chronic health conditions via healthcare technology has demonstrated to be beneficial to both the patient and the healthcare provider. Hospitalizations are less frequent, quality of life is improved, and patients are empowered to make decisions regarding treatment of their chronic illness (Radhakrishnan, Xie, Berkley, & Kim, 2016). Management of Chronic Childhood and Adolescent Asthma Essay Example
Today, it is estimated that up to 15-20% of adolescents in the United States have one or more chronic illnesses (Jin, An, & Wang, 2017). Some of the most common chronic illnesses in children are:
Asthma
Assignment Description:
Search for an innovative technological device or program that will assist in the self-management of one of the above mentioned chronic illnesses in children and teenagers. Prepare a document instructing a child (school age or adolescent) and family regarding the features of this technology and its use. Some things to be included in this teaching document are:
How will this technology or device assist with medication management? Give examples.
How will this technology or device assist in early detection of symptom changes? Give examples.
How will this technology or device assist in disease management education?
Will younger clients be able to use this technology independently, or will assistance from parents or guardians be needed?
Will this technology follow the child throughout the teenage years, or will a change be needed as the client ages and develops? Give an example.
When creating this teaching document:
· Create a document that considers a child’s level of understanding.
· Do not use medical terms a child and the family might not understand.
· Individualize the document to a child’s needs and style of communication.
· Use evidence-based nursing practice to support your teaching.

Application of Mobile Phone Technology (Asthma Management Apps) in the Management of Chronic Childhood and Adolescent Asthma
There are a number of novel innovative technologies available for use in the management of chronic diseases or conditions. One of these chronic conditions that benefits from these new technologies and technological applications is asthma. Asthma manifests as the narrowing of airways through bronchospasms that make it difficult for the victim to breath. It is usually precipitated by allergens that are more often than not environmental in nature. These cause inflammation of the airways, bronchospasms, increased mucus secretion, and impaired mucociliary clearance (Suau & DeBlieux, 2016). Lack of proper management of chronic conditions outside the healthcare setup has been resulting in preventable rehospitalizations and avoidable mortality (Radhakrishnan et al., 2015). According to Messinger et al. (2018), patents with pediatric asthma are some of the patient demographics that are prime candidates for the use of technology in the management of the condition. This paper identifies mobile smartphone technology in the form of asthma management apps as the technology of choice for managing pediatric and adolescent asthma (Alquran et al., 2018). The following is a narrative of the document instructing the child or adolescent with chronic asthma as well as their family on the features of this technology.

The technology will also help in the early detection of symptom changes because it has in-built interactivity that will facilitate communication between the patient and the clinician or provider. When the patient feels that they are about to have an exacerbation, therefore, they can directly engage the clinician who will then advise in real time the next course of action. The patient can text, video chat, or send a voice message directly to the provider. Using the video chat capability in particular, the clinician can get valuable objective information by observing the patient remotely through this video. This increases the speed of interventions (clinical decisions) since the patient does not have to take time travelling to the location where the provider is for medical attention. Interventions are therefore quicker, timely, patent-centered, and effective. There is also the element of cost-effectiveness as there is no money spent on transportation of the patient from the hoe environment to the hospital.
