Advanced registered nurses (ARNs) hold at least a Master’s degree in addition to registered nurse (RN) licensure and initial nursing education. They have four specialties: certified nurse midwives, certified registered nurse anesthetists, clinical nurse specialists and nurse practitioners. ARNs act as primary care providers with a focus on providing preventive care services. They are involved in treating and diagnosing illnesses, advising the public on health issues, and managing chronic ailments. Firstly, certified nurse midwives have the practice specialty role of providing reproductive, gynecological and primary health care (American Nurses Association, 2020). They are certified by the American Midwifery Certification Board that is accredited by the National commission for Certifying Agencies. In addition, certification is only offered for individuals who have received their graduate level education in programs accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (American Midwifery Certification Board, 2020). Secondly, certified registered nurse anesthetists have the practice specialty role of providing pain management and anesthesia services (American Nurses Association, 2020). They receive their credentials from the National Board of Certification & Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists, the national body responsible for initial and continued certification of all nurse anesthetists operating in the country (National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists, 2020).

Thirdly, clinical nurse specialists have the specialty role of providing diagnosis, treatment and ongoing management for patients, providing support and expertise to nursing personnel, helping to drive practice change, and ensuring the use of evidence-based care and best practice to achieve the best possible care outcomes (American Nurses Association, 2020). They receive their certification based on the patient population focus with the American Nurses Credentialing Center and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses offering certification based on the patient population focus (MSNedu.org, 2020).

Finally, nurse practitioners have the specialty role of providing specialty, acute and primary health care services across the patient’s lifespan through injury and illness assessment, diagnosis and treatment (American Nurses Association, 2020). They are certified by the National Certification Corporation, The Pediatric Nursing Certification Board, American Association of Critical Care Nurses Certification Corporation, The American Nurses Credentialing Center Certification Program, and The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board. Each agency manages a different certification program (American Association of Nurse Practitioners, 2020).
