Nurses in Leadership Role

Discuss a formal role where a nurse is in a position of leadership

Head nurse is a formal role with the responsibility for overall care of patients seeking both inpatient and outpatient treatment services in the facility. The head nurse has administrative and supervisory responsibilities that focus on managing nursing care teams in all the departments within the facility and ensuring that patients are in comforts within the facility, to include before, during and after medical procedures (Zaccagnini & White, 2017).

Outline the essential responsibilities of that role

The head nurse has the responsibility of overseeing the effectiveness and performance of all nursing staff under the management. This can include the nursing staff within a section of the facility, a department/unit or the entire facility. In addition, the head nurse is responsible for developing cohesive and effective nursing teams, educating and training nurses, reviewing and signing appropriate nursing procedures, maintaining medical records, and handing out assignments. Besides that, they report to upper management, health care specialists and physicians as intermediaries between the management and nursing staff (Zaccagnini & White, 2017).  Nurses in Leadership Role Essay Discussion Paper

Discuss the educational preparation required

The position of head nurse requires at least a Bachelor of Science majoring in nursing or a Bachelor of Nursing. However, a master’s degree in a nursing specialty or an administrative field from an accredited education institution is preferred by most employers as this endows the head nurse with skills in areas of critical thinking, communication and leadership, which are useful for the associated responsibilities (Zaccagnini & White, 2017).

Explain what leadership traits, styles, or qualities are required to be successful in this role and why

Seven traits are required to be a successful head nurse. Firstly, professionalism with confident and competent leadership that represents nursing at every professional point of contact. Secondly, mentorship that applies motivational strategies to guide subordinate nurses towards understanding their roles. Thirdly, respect that that is passionate and dynamically influences others towards the desired change. Fourthly, professional socialization that applies learning processes to develop subordinate nurses. Fifthly, communication skills that encourages collaboration. Sixthly, dedication to excellence in delivering top-notch service. Finally, critical thinking that makes the best decisions based on a complex array of factors (Finkelman, 2019).
