What value orientation might Mr. Santiago have that. would affect his feelings about staying home from work because of his illness?
Value orientation has been termed as the basic principles of right or wrong that a person or a social group accept. From Mr. Santiago’s case, mononucleosis is a contagious disease characterized by symptoms such as fever, sore throat and fatigue hence a recommendation to abstain from work for two weeks. The major social value orientation that would perhaps affect Mr. Santiago’s feeling about staying at home from work because of his illness include prosocial value orientation. Nursing Advance Assessment Essay Example Prosocial orientation is portrayed when one enhances their own outcomes first followed by the outcomes of others (Leder, Pastukhov & Schütz, 2020). Through staying at home, the patient’s feelings would be positively affected since he would be preventing worsening of his condition as well as preventing the spread of mononucleosis disease to his colleagues at work.
What hot and cold remedies might he have tried already to self-treat his condition?
Just like any other viral infection, mononucleosis has no cure but there exist some various home remedies to manage mono depending on one’s symptoms. Some of the hot remedies that he might have tried include managing sore throat through gargling warm water and salt or gargling warm water and apple cider vinegar. One should also consider drinking plenty of hot or warm drinks such as hot water, herbal tea and soup to control their sore throat (Alasmari et al., 2017). Among the effective cold remedies that he might have used include taking a cool bath to lower down fever. One may also consider taking a cold foot bath. Consuming something cold such as popsicle or an ice cream also acts as a cold remedy in lowering the fever.
How would you demonstrate cultural competent care for this gentleman?
Cultural competence involves provision of quality healthcare services by healthcare workers to patients while showing concern to their cultural values and beliefs. As a healthcare provider, I would first strive to create awareness to the patient and avoid any unnecessary assumptions concerning the patient’s Hispanic culture. I would therefore engage the patient with questions concerning their culture to gain more understanding of the Hispanic population. While asking such questions I would make use of body language to help create a good rapport with the patient (Singleton, 2017). I would also take my time in educating the patient about the available medical practices to manage their mononucleosis illness. While educating him, I would frequently be asking him to repeat what I say for a better understanding and for him to manage his condition properly while at home. I would also incorporate active listening skills after asking every question. This would help me to answer every question in simple and clear manner that the patient would understand.
