Nursing Informatics Essay Assignment Paper
Main Discussion
Nursing informatics “is the specialty that integrates nursing science with multiple information and analytical sciences to identify, define, manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice.”(HIMSS, 2019) The collection and analysis of data to increase knowledge among the healthcare teams are beneficial to the care provided to our patients. By adhering to legally required patient care documentation by various providers guides the medical treatment, the patients will receive from other providers who would have access to their health history. According to Tiase, 2022, the nurse Informaticists plays an integral part in identifying any gaps in care by analyzing the data to improve processes. Nursing Informatics Essay Assignment Paper
The Operating Room is a highly specialized area that utilizes scheduled or “block times” for efficiency and time management for patients and surgeons. Various factors may cause delays in the times scheduled for surgeries. When an operating room is experiencing delays, there are financial implications for the healthcare system. Surgeons may have to postpone surgeries, and patients may be dissatisfied and seek healthcare elsewhere. Data collection that identifies a pattern for the delay is essential to improve efficiency.
The perioperative data is started at the scheduling department using average times of previous surgeries per procedure or surgeons to determine estimated block times. In the preoperative unit, the Nurse enters pertinent times in the EMR such as the arrival time of the patient, times of each stage of the preparation such as obtaining vital signs, obtaining surgical and anesthetic consent, and the time all prerequisites are completed prior to going to the Operating Room. The Nurse in the Operating Room will continue documenting the arrival times of the patient and surgeon and the reasons for the delay. Surgical start and end times will be entered, and the time the patient left the OR to go to PACU. There should be an alert if the time exceeds the allotted time for the duration between cleaning of the Operating Room and the arrival of the next patient. By analyzing these data, management and Nurse leaders will work together with the team to implement or make changes to policies to encourage maximum time efficiency at all stages of the perioperative services.

Assignment: The Nurse Leader as Knowledge Worker
The term “knowledge worker” was first coined by management consultant and author Peter Drucker in his book, The Landmarks of Tomorrow (1959). Drucker defined knowledge workers as high-level workers who apply theoretical and analytical knowledge, acquired through formal training, to develop products and services. Does this sound familiar?
Nurses are very much knowledge workers. What has changed since Drucker’s time are the ways that knowledge can be acquired. The volume of data that can now be generated and the tools used to access this data have evolved significantly in recent years and helped healthcare professionals (among many others) to assume the role of knowledge worker in new and powerful ways.
In this Assignment, you will consider the evolving role of the nurse leader and how this evolution has led nurse leaders to assume the role of knowledge worker. You will prepare a PowerPoint presentation with an infographic (graphic that visually represents information, data, or knowledge. Infographics are intended to present information quickly and clearly.) to educate others on the role of nurse as knowledge worker.
