Worldview and nursing process personal statement
Personal worldview
I am a Christian who believes that every person should be treated with dignity and respect regardless of background or status. This belief forms the foundation of my personal worldview, and helps to guide my life and decisions. In fact, my personal worldview helps me to make sense of my life and how I perceive reality. Also, it helps to guide me morally and ethically, especially in matters with cultural, spiritual and religious implications (Catalano, 2015). As a Christian, I believe that all humans were created by God, and we all exist to serve our creator. This is an absolute truth without question: God is the Creator and Almighty. This gives God dominion over all creations. Still, God allows humans to have free will in which they can make the decision to either follow God’s word to do Good or do evil after which there will be a reckoning on the judgment day. Nursing Process Personal Philosophy Essay Paper For those who do good there are rewards while for those who do bad there is punishment. Part of doing good is following God’s commandments and instructions, as well as treating others with dignity and respect. I believe in the Supremacy of the Christian God, and understand that I was created to spend my life serving God. In this respect, I get my instructions on how to live my life from God’s word as presented in the Bible and other Christian religious literature.
As a human being who was created, my life is a gift from God who is the only Divine Being. I am prone to making mistakes since I am human with limited knowledge and understanding. Before God, I am inherently a sinner who is seeking salvation through Jesus Christ. I try as much as possible to follow God’s word and seek forgiveness for my transgressions. Additionally, I always try not to intentionally sin or make mistakes. As a Christian, the Bible forms the core of my life and guides all my thoughts, decisions and actions. However, I still make mistakes as my environment exerts some influence on my behavior and some of that behavior is contrary to what the Bible instructs. For instance, God commands Christians not to engage in killing. However, my responsibilities as a nurse have sometime involved performing abortions. Although the abortions are justified through medical arguments, the fact is that they involve killing, an action that is contrary to God’s commandment not to kill. As a nurse, I must concede that abortion makes sense when the life of the mother is threatened. The implication is that although the Bible forms the core of my decisions and actions, the environmental elements around me also exert some influence as I live in a world where I try to fit in. In essence, I have interacted with my world and this has secularized my perception. Interactions with other people, science, law, politics, history and many other subjects have always formed the basis of my ethical conflicts as what the society expects of me as a member of my community clashes with what God expects of me as a Christian. Still, I typically face these ethical dilemmas with a focus on minimizing disruptions to my life (Black, 2016). As a result, my worldview is based on the Christian perspective although it is influenced by my environment.
Nursing theory
Jean Watson’s “Theory of Human Caring” is the nursing theory that best aligns to my worldview. I am a Christian, and believe that my life is a gift from God and should be spent in service to other. Although I do not have a deep understanding of the Christian religion, I believe that the created should serve their creator. Similarly, all humans should serve God who created them. I have fulfilled this expectation through service to others as a nurse. Watson’s theory aligns with this belief through allowing for genuine caring and not simply as an expectation or professional obligation. The theory explains that caring is a core requirement for any nurse who seeks to be successful since it is a guide on how to display concern and kindness to the patients and family members even as the best possible care outcomes are pursued. Patients and their family members are less knowledgeable about health care thus making them a vulnerable group. They expect that nurses will always treat them with respect and care, and act in their best interest. Through applying the concept of caring as presented in the theory, a nurse is able to have the right nursing personality and mentality to provide the best possible care (Butts & Karen, 2018).
Future practice
My worldview as a Christian and Watson’s theory are aligned and will help in in further developing my future practice. The two (my worldview and Watson’s theory) have turned me into a caring and tolerant individual who is open to new ideas from others. I always seek to learn new things. Even as I practice nursing, I understand that I am limited by the circumstances, knowledge, and expectations. It is this awareness that motivates me to seek further education as I improve myself. As a human being created by God, I should respect and treat every person with dignity irrespective of background or social standing. In fact, I should treat others the same way I would like to be treated under similar circumstances. This includes always providing the best possible care to my patients (Finkelman, 2016). I rely on my worldview to make decisions that I consider rational and ethical. It has helped me to take my responsibility to safeguard the health of others seriously. We are all God’s creation and caring for others through nursing services means that I can safeguard their health. I have a caring personality and believe that it is my responsibility to care for others as instructed by the Bible. This belief has made pursuing a nursing profession as a good career fit. However, I am not complacent in my achievements and believe that there is always room for improvement. It is for this reason that I intend to specialize in nursing informatics. I understand that it is not enough to care. I must be ready to determine where the most care is required. Informatics will help me achieve this goal through objectively evaluating data to determine trends that inform nursing interventions and approaches. Further education enables me to acquire nursing informatics qualifications (Hunt, 2015). Overall, my worldview as a Christian and Watson’s theory have helped me identify a suitable career trajectory that allows me to apply the concepts of caring by specializing in nursing informatics.
