Organizational Culture Barriers
Nursing leaders can occasionally feel powerless when faced with barriers caused by an organizational culture. The first barrier is coordination and communication shortcomings. Nurses coordinate and communicate with different functional areas and any difficulties in conducting the associated activities could result in psychological let down. This barrier can be addressed through overcoming organizational inertia and modifying the attitudes of nurses (Nightingale, 2018). The second barrier is social bonding shortcomings with regards to the inability of nurse to develop positive and enriching personal relationships with other nurses, medical personnel and patients.
Having strong social bonds helps with developing mutual personal affinity and friendship that lead to positive interpersonal relationships. This barrier can be addressed through facilitating the social exchange process. The third barrier is difficulty in disseminating internal information. Nursing leaders ned information to help them with better managerial insight and decision-making through ensuring that they are well informed. This barrier can be addressed by ensuring that the required information is availed in a timely manner. The fourth barrier is a lack of training that would instil nurses with the necessary skills and capabilities to perform their tasks. This barrier can be addressed by availing the required training so that nurses have an opportunity to improve their knowledge, skill and competency levels. The fifth barrier is the lack of a reward system. This shortcoming has negative implications for loyalty, performance and commitment. This barrier can be addressed through implementing a fair reward scheme that includes both financial and non-financial rewards. The final barrier is empowerment in terms of discretion and autonomy. A restricted environment with no discretion or freedom is a barrier for nurse leaders. This barrier can be addressed through empowering nurses (Janjua, Ahmad & Afzal, 2014).
