Global News reporter, Liny Lamberink, explains how this misuse of opioids has been the cause of death for thousands of people across Canada, including 400 deaths in London, Ontario. Sadly, London has grown to have the second highest opioid usage rate and the third highest overdose rate in Canada. Fortunately for its citizens, the city of London is proposing a plan that will get them one step closer to solving what some may call an epidemic.
I personally believe that this plan is an amazing step forward and will help prevent thousands of drug users from overdosing and becoming ill from drug-related illnesses. Before going into detail about why exactly this plan to curb the opioid crisis is very beneficial and should be widely supported, it is first important to explain what exactly the city of London’s plan proposes to do. London already has a needle exchange program set in place that provides its 6000 registered users with millions of clean, sterilized needles, helping thousands of users be safer when injecting opioids into their bloodstreams.

Taking a further step in the right direction, as of February 12, 2018, London opened its first overdose prevention and safe injection site. This site allows for opioid users to be provided with sanitary, regulated, and uninfected needles as well as drug supplies. Many opioids being circulated on the streets are laced with extremely fatal drugs, such as fentanyl and carfentanil, causing opioid-related death rates in London to rise to even higher levels. Users are buying their drugs off of people who cannot be trusted and it’s resulting in the death of many individuals due to the unknown injection of drugs like fentanyl. With safe injection sites, users have access to clean and regulated drug supplies which will lower the number of deaths caused by fentanyl, yet another reason to support injection sites.
