Personal Leadership Philosophies Assignment Paper

Personal Leadership Philosophies Assignment Paper

Many of us can think of leaders we have come to admire, be they historical figures, pillars of the industry we work in, or leaders we know personally. The leadership of individuals such as Abraham Lincoln and Margaret Thatcher has been studied and discussed repeatedly. However, you may have interacted with leaders you feel demonstrated equally competent leadership without ever having a book written about their approaches.

What makes great leaders great? Every leader is different, of course, but one area of commonality is the leadership philosophy that great leaders develop and practice. A leadership philosophy is basically an attitude held by leaders that acts as a guiding principle for their behavior. While formal theories on leadership continue to evolve over time, great leaders seem to adhere to an overarching philosophy that steers their actions.

Personal Leadership Philosophies

Leaders have always been admired individual who present as pillars. They present unique traits and qualities that others seek to emulate. Personal Leadership Philosophies Assignment Paper    This is especially true among nurses in the health care environment where every decision that leaders make have implications for the health and wellbeing of patients and others. At the core of understanding about leadership is the awareness that leaders are guided by philosophies that determine the overarching attitudes and guiding principles for behaviors. Even as formal leadership theories continue to evolve over time, admired leaders appear adhere to an overarching philosophies that steer their behaviors and actions. Gaining an understanding of these philosophies is instrumental in guiding the development as a leader (Raingruber, 2017). The present paper explores personal leadership philosophies based on an assessment profile and presents strategies for improving leadership capabilities.

A description of your core values

My core leadership values are responsibility and integrity. Firstly, I understand that as a leader, I must be responsible to the stakeholders with a focus on fostering an environment that is transparent in all aspects. In addition, I strive to build trust as this helps with delivering safe high quality care. Also, I hold myself accountable for the culture and relationships that I build and maintain within any environment. Secondly, I engage others with integrity, trying my best to ensure that safe, compassionate and quality care is delivered. I achieve this by remaining accountable to stakeholders for their satisfaction, and to colleagues and subordinates for work-life balance. Additionally, I listen and learn from other stakeholders.

A personal mission/vision statement

My personal vision is to identify and present innovative, creative and practical ways of completing nursing tasks and responsibilities. I understanding that nursing science is an evolving science with new discoveries being made. I would like to be an active part of that evolution by making meaningful contributions that advance the science. Ultimately, I want to emulate the prominent nurses, such as Florence Nightingale, Virginia Henderson and Jean Watson whose influence in the nursing profession and science is still evidence through their innovative theories and models. This vision inspires me to learn all that I can about nursing and always improve myself so that I am better able to identify and address challenges in the profession.

An analysis of your CliftonStrengths Assessment summarizing the results of your profile

A leadership strengths analysis was conducted using the tools developed and presented by CliftonStrengths to develop a personal leadership profile. The assessment identified five themes. The first theme is consistency with balance considered important. I consciously seek to treat every person in the same way, and try to have balanced relationships. The second theme is harmony as I always look for areas of agreement. I consider conflicts very distracting as they take much energy and time away from other constructive activities. The third theme is positivity as I am generous with praise and positive sentiments in all situations. I have a contagious enthusiasm that is optimistic about all situations. The fourth theme is developer as I see the potential in others and always seek to develop this potential. I consciously look to develop the strengths of others. The final theme is includer as I try to ensure that every person has an opportunity to be part of my circle of influence (Gallup, 2020).

A description of two key behaviors that you wish to strengthen

Two key behaviors that I wish to strengthen are consistency and developer. Firstly, I always seek to have balance. However, this behavior stagnates progress as I would instinctively stifle some things that facilitate development and innovation. I would like to be less cautious and more inclined towards tipping the balance when seeking to maximize value. Also, I would make the environment less predictable so that each person gets a chance to grow and develop based on differences. Secondly, I am a developer who seeks the potential in others. My concern is that the potential that I see may not really exist. I would like to strengthen this behavior by gaining the ability to better identify the potential in others (Gallup, 2017).

A development plan that explains how you plan to improve upon the two key behaviors you selected and an explanation of how you plan to achieve your personal vision.

I intend to strengthen the two behaviors. The first step is to enroll in leadership training programs where I would acquire theoretical knowledge on the appropriate behaviors and how to improve them in the practice environment. The second step is to be conscious of these behaviors in the practice environment and seek to change them even as I practice. This would involve retrospectively reviewing my leadership and thinking of what I would change in order to improve towards the desired direction. The third step is to emulate the leadership around me who exhibit the desired behavior. Watching how others act would offer valuable insight into how to exhibit the desired leadership behavior. Overall, all the efforts at changing the two behaviors involve making a conscious effort with the awareness that change is necessary and desired (Stewart & DeNisco, 2019).
