Personal leadership philosophies

Personal leadership philosophies are the set of principles and beliefs used to conduct information analysis for decision-making purposes. In fact, they allow individuals to gain an awareness of their priorities, values, expectations, and approaches to decision-making (Marquis & Huston, 2017). As a nurse, I ascribe to three personal leadership philosophies. The first philosophy is to always choose a thought process that matches the prevailing circumstances. The second philosophy is to motivate others to adopt a similar thought process to mine. The final philosophy is to motivate others to work in concert rather than against each other.  Personal Leadership Philosophies Essay Paper

In addition to the three philosophies, I ascribe to eight core values that help in focusing and aligning the choices I make as a leader. The first value is respect that allows me to value, esteem and appreciate others. The second core value is perseverance that allows me to be determined and persist in achieving set objectives. The third value is happiness that enables me to always feel gladness, delight, bliss, pleasure, contentment, and joy in all activities. The fifth value is an achievement that allows me to focus on accomplishments and success (Butts & Karen, 2018). The sixth value is the freedom that enables me to pursue self-determination, autonomy, liberty, free will, and independence. The seventh value is the stewardship that enables me to support others in making a contribution and being resourceful. The final value is the integrity that enables me to act with commitment, sincerity, justice, decency, consistency, dependability, reliability, responsibility, truthfulness, and honesty (Sang & Dearholt, 2018).

The eight core values are aligned with my personal vision and mission. My vision is to be an impactful, empathetic and honest leader who is recognized by my peers and other stakeholders. I am committed to delivering value-added services to my patients and growing as a nurse-leader. My mission is to create and lead a nursing team that plays to its strengths (Iszatt-White & Saunders, 2017).

A review of the Clifton Strengths Assessment results reveals that I have an analytical leadership profile. In this case, I am inclined to trust well-researched data. For that matter, I have an investigative personality and tend to want to delve deeper into issues and understand the what and why of everything in my environment. Although this profile has supported me well in evidence-based practice since it creates a need for statistical support, it creates a problem when the statistical approach presents a concern. This is particularly so when the data collection and analysis methods are not well explained so that I am unable to evaluate them for suitability and accuracy (Iszatt-White & Saunders, 2017).

Given this awareness, there is a need for me to strengthen two key leadership behaviors. First, I should strengthen myself by knowing myself with regard to my emotional state, weaknesses, and strengths so that I am better prepared for all eventualities to include circumstances in which my capacity for leadership is compromised. In addition, I should improve my communication skills so as to more effectively communicate with other stakeholders. To address the three behavioral concerns, I have created a development plan with three components. I should begin by refining my core values, vision and mission since this will set the overall tone for my leadership. Next, I should have a timeline for the values, vision and mission as this will motivate me to take pro-active steps that are time-bound. Finally, I should conduct regular evaluations and assessments to ensure that I have a feedback mechanism and remain relevant even as problems and deficiencies encountered are addressed appropriately and in a timely manner (Ledlow & Coppola, 2014).
