Describe the organizational type (i.e. government, non-for-profit)
NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (NYPH) is a medical organization that is affiliated with Weill Cornell Medicine and Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. It provides comprehensive medical services to include specialty, primary and emergency care. It provides high quality compassionate care and services that are delivered through a comprehensive, integrated academic health care delivery approach. It serves patients from across New York, USA and the world (NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, 2021a). Policy Advocacy and Healthcare Ethics Essay Paper It is the largest not-for-profit health care organizations in the USA with a bed a bed capacity of 2,455 across five-major centers (NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, 2021b).
Discuss how the organization is financed
As a not-for-profit organization, NYPH is financed through the sale of medical services and products. It earns an income from its activities as a health care organization. In addition, it earns an income from donors. However, the profits from its activities are not distributed to the shareholders/investors, but are instead distributed to activities that further the advancement of the organization with a focus on furthering health and wellbeing as a social cause and providing public benefit (Koutoukidis & Stainton, 2020).
Describe how quality care is defined. Is patient safety part of the definition? Is the term evidence-based practice used in any definitions?
NYPH defines quality as focus on applying evidence-based practice through a bottom-up and top-down approach to improvement. The assumption is that evidence-based practice strives for operational, service and clinical excellence while providing effective and safe care for patients. The definition includes patient safety and is based on evidence-based practice (NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, 2021b).
Discuss how quality patient outcomes are defined and measured
Quality patient outcomes are defined as the optimized results of health care that patients receive in the facility to include patient satisfaction, maintenance of patient safety and patient functional status. Quality outcomes are measured on seven main areas: efficient use of medical equipment and resources; timeliness of care; patient experience; effectiveness of care; safety of care; readmissions; and mortality.
Discuss the types of policies and procedures that should be developed and implemented at this facility
Covid-19 pandemic has presented serious concerns for the organization. Beyond the clinical challenge of the pandemic, there is the formidable financial challenge that has seen the organization reporting significant losses. The facility costs have soared, outpatients are stuck at home and elective procedures are cancelled, so that the financial shortfall remains high. Patients are also wary of returning to health care settings. The organization must address this concern by implementing a Covid-19 vaccination policy for its personnel. This would help in creating a safer environment, protecting the personnel (as a resource) and community, and improving public confidence in the organization so that it receives more patients seeking care. With this measure, the organization’s earnings would increase (Buppert, 2020).
