Title: Reducing postpartum depression with education

Project description

The project identifies the problem of postpartum depression (PPD) among women after childbirth. It identifies PPD as a serious mental illness that affects the physical health and behavior in women after birth. Approximately 1.2% of women suffer from PPD after birth and this interferes with their day-to-day life, causing them to feel unconnected to the newborn. PPD is a concern because women who suffer from the condition experience confusion, paranoia, mania, hallucination, and delusions that place them at high risk of harming themselves and/or others to include the newborn child (Anderson, 2017). The purpose of the present project is to offer nurse-led patient education support to women during pre-natal care to help in reducing PPD occurrence. The education will apply anticipatory guidance to help the new mothers to identify the PPD at the earliest opportunity thus facilitating intervention measures. The education should be applied comprehensively during the prenatal period, briefly during hospitalization for birth, and reinforced post-discharge (McCarter-Spaulding & Shea, 2016).

Project contribution to nursing and organization

The project has implications for nursing and the organization. It has implications for nursing through building the patients’ knowledge, understanding and preparedness for self-management. In fact, it allows nurses to incorporate patient teaching into their practices to transfer pedagogical competence, practical experience and transferring the most current evidence/information to establish trusting relationships that support self-management and learning. The project formalizes the process of patient education so that nurses are better prepared to provide patient education in accordance with patient-centered communication (Bergh et al., 2015). As such, the project will improve the nurses’ ability to provide patient education, and patients’ capacity for self-management.

In addition, the project has implications for the organization through shifting its focus towards patient-centered care by focusing on patient education to foster better engagement. The education effort is anticipated to help inspire and empower patients to take ownership of their care. Through education, they are able to make informed decisions thereby becoming partners in the care team thus acting as a marketing strategy for the organization. A patient who is knowledgeable about potential treatment options and care is better able to present preferences and identify how they want to receive health care. It informs the patients on how to maintain their health data and helps them to navigate the health care system and informs them on how to maintain their health data. Also, it helps patients to understand the unique aspects of their health, and spurs them to seek relevant health information (Hayden, 2014). In the respect, the project is anticipated to improve the efficiency of health care services delivery in the organization.

Justification for budgetary needs

The project intends to spend $6,850 over 6 months (see Table 2). This cost covers patient training material and nurse personnel training costs. The patient training material are necessary as guides on how nurses should proceed. The material will be presented as brochures that contain a summary of important details to know about PPD. Printers and stationery costs are included in the budget. The nurse personnel training costs include training material and trainer costs. This is necessary for preparing nurses on how to effectively structure their patient education delivery.

Expected timeframe and completion date – project timeline

The project will use an iterative approach. Each iteration will result in a project milestone being achieved. Data from each milestone will offer important feedback that will be taken into consideration for the proceeding steps (see Table 1).

Grant Assignment Guidelines and Rubric                                                                              20% of Grade

This assignment is intended to fulfill three goals: 1) Have you prepare a brief grant for your capstone project (Topic: Reducing postpartum depression with education); 2) have you prepare of basic budget for your capstone project; and 3) provide justification for your budget (pre-post surveys for 60 participants).  This can be a brief paper as long as you are able to communicate the required content.  This assignment is worth 28 points.

Prepare a basic budget—refer to your Gitlin and Lyons text chapters for preparing and providing justification of an itemized budget. Be sure that you do a complete itemization that includes the item you need (desk chair)—how many you need (2) –cost of the item ($50) and total cost ($100).  Consider the major costs involved with your project. The costs may be estimated but should closely reflect ALL costs associated with your capstone project—as if you were applying for grant funding. This means the actual costs associated with starting up your project—as if the project implementation site is unable to provide you with anything. Describe your budget both in paragraph format and in a table format. Some category items may include (this is not an exhaustive list): salary, postage, consulting fees (experts or statisticians), supplies, travel associated with project implementation, hardware/software.

**Please note that project dissemination costs such as attending a conference, etc. are required as part of your budget.

Please refer to your Melnyk text, Waxman text, and the Gitlin and Lyons PDF in week 5 for examples of budgets and project timeline tables.

Required Components Points Available Points Received
Title and brief description of project—similar to an abstract.  Be sure to include problem and significance, purpose, design/intervention and the intended outcomes. 5
How will this project contribute to the science of nursing and benefit the organization?   Be sure to cover both.  Does the project increase the body of nursing knowledge—if so how?  What specifically can be gained from the project implementation site based on your project—does it improve outcomes, retain staff, etc.? 2
Why can this project NOT be accomplished within normal workload hours and project site funding?  This is to help justify why you need the money. 2
Describe in paragraph format the expected timeframe and date of completion. 3
Detailed itemized budget (how many of each item do you need, what percent salary, etc.)  in paragraph format– with justification for all items required in the budget
