Professional Capstone and Practicum Weekly Reflective Narratives

In this capstone requirement, the student is expected to write down reflective narratives of knowledge acquired and lessons learnt in the course of each week during the practicum period. The reflective topics are divided into different categories covering all the three learning areas of cognitive domain, affective domain, and psychomotor domain.   1. New practice approaches: These are novel approaches to offering interventions that have been learnt or practiced during the previous practicum week, such as new EBP recommendations after clinical inquiry.
  2. Interprofessional collaboration: These are the lessons learnt on how to co-operate with other multidisciplinary team members in delivering care to patients.
  3. Healthcare delivery and clinical systems: This is knowledge acquired and lessons learnt about innovative clinical systems helping in improving care quality. An example is patient data management systems or PDMS (Alotaibi & Federico, 2017).

  4. Ethical considerations in healthcare: These are the experiences lived in the past week on how the bioethical principles of autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice (Haswell, 2019) are applied in patient care.
  5. Culturally sensitive practice: These are lessons on cultural competence learnt.
  6. Integrity of human dignity: These are lessons related to ethics as in (4) above.
  7. Population health concerns: This is knowledge and matters related to public health and community health. For instance, the prevention of Covid-19 spread.
  8. The place of technology in improving healthcare: Particularly, the student’s experience with the electronic health record (EHR) system.
  9. Health Policy: Knowledge of how regulatory and legislative rules and regulations affect patient care. For instance, the Death with Dignity Act or DWDA (Simmons, 2018).  Professional Capstone and Practicum Reflective Journal
  10. Leadership and economic models: All those experiences learnt about effective clinical leadership in the context of interprofessional collaboration. Also includes lessons learnt about the business of healthcare as a going concern.
  11. Health disparities: This is the experience of the student on practicum of socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic disparities related to access to and consumption of healthcare services.

Professional Capstone and Practicum Reflective Journal

Students are required to submit weekly reflective narratives throughout the course that will culminate in a final, course-long reflective journal due in Topic 10. The narratives help students integrate leadership and inquiry into current practice.

This reflection journal also allows students to outline what they have discovered about their professional practice, personal strengths and weaknesses, and additional resources that could be introduced in a given situation to influence optimal outcomes. Each week students should also explain how they met a course competency or course objective(s).

In each week\’s entry, students should reflect on the personal knowledge and skills gained throughout the course. Journal entries should address one or more of the areas stated below. In the Topic 10 graded submission, each of the areas below should be addressed as part of the summary submission.

New practice approaches
Interprofessional collaboration
Health care delivery and clinical systems
Ethical considerations in health care
Practices of culturally sensitive care
Ensuring the integrity of human dignity in the care of all patients
Population health concerns
The role of technology in improving health care outcomes
Health policy
Leadership and economic models
Health disparities

While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.
