Discuss two (2) professional career goals, identifying how your professional experiences to date have prepared you for graduate study at Pace University and how the graduate program will assist you in meeting these goals.
Having a set of professional goals in any field acts as a motivation factor towards succeeding in that particular field. The first professional career goal is utilizing experience, knowledge and skills towards initiating one’s expertise in a particular field. In my opinion, being an expert in any field of healthcare refers to provision of healthcare services in an excellent way. My experience encompasses having worked for more than ten years as a nurse in Singapore and Philippines. Particularly, I have practiced in different areas that include Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and endoscopy. While practicing in these areas, I have gained much clinical experience that has made me to realize that acquiring advanced training would increase the quality of care required. Through the computer literacy, communication skills and critical thinking experience I gained in ICU, PACU, and endoscopy my educational training at the Pace University will highly be boosted. The experience gained has also positively impacted my organizational skills, physical abilities, problem solving skills and research. Having acquired these values will act as an added advantage while working on my graduate level education at the Pace university. My experience as a nurse in these different areas has also promoted my skills of effectively working in a team. Working in a critical care and endoscopy requires a high level of patience and collaboration which are also some of the values that I gained.
Quality care improvement for the patients is the second professional goal. My long term aspirations in the field of healthcare is to maximize the quality of services delivered to patients at any given time. Achieving this will be determined by the education level that I will attain. Professional Development Paper Essay Through advancing my education, the values and skills gained during my experience such as research and computer literacy will be highly impacted. Advancing my educational training will also play a role in attaining other related important skills such as the leadership skills. After acquiring the desired educational level, my aim is to positively influence the entire clinical setting including my fellow colleagues and patients as well. Having an experience of working in three different areas generated my motivation towards improving the skills and knowledge gained from different patient’s encounters. Most patients who also presented with different healthcare conditions challenged my knowledge and skills each day. Advancing my educational training at Pace university will therefore greatly impact my knowledge and skills as well as enlarging my scope of practice in nursing. Advancing my educational training will also act as a form of platform building, where different people would be presenting their health related problems.
Describe your plans to alter your professional and/or personal obligations to have the time needed for graduate study, including the required clinical experiences.
The psychiatric nursing program is a challenging one implying that I will have to dedicate most of my time during class attendance, research, doing assignments, working in group discussions as well as reading for examinations. My first intention towards creating these time will be to reduce the hours spent while working as a nurse in my current place of work. I will do so through reducing my number of shifts in the healthcare organization thus creating more time in classwork, assignments among other academic work. By so doing, I will also be creating a balance between classwork and practical work in my current healthcare organization. Some of the personal obligations that I will have to alter include the home based duties. I therefore intend to hire a house help who would be performing most of the house chores if not all. By doing so, I will be able to adjust my personal academic timetable thereby creating more time. I am also planning to reduce the time spend with the family and friends. I have already informed my family members and friends that I will be more committed somewhere else and that I would spend much of my time in academics. I would also reduce my usual hours of recreation. I am a person who likes going on hikes and swimming. I intend to reduce these hours to utilize them in doing my academic researches and assignments. I therefore believe that altering my time at both personal and professional experience level is a significant indicator of my preparation to undertake the nursing program. Identify one issue in the United States health care system and discuss the role of advanced nursing practice in addressing this issue.
There are various issues/hindrances that continue to negatively impact the United States’ healthcare system. Medical errors are one of the major issues. Medical error refers to occurrence of a preventable event that impact inappropriate medication use by the patient thereby causing harm. Medical error may also refer to any unintended practice in medication done mistakenly by the healthcare provider during health service delivery thereby causing harm to the patient. Most fatalities in most of the healthcare facilities in US occur due to errors that are preventable. Examples of medical errors include wrong medication prescription as well as surgery being done in wrong parts of the body. Medical errors are currently the third cause of fatalities after cancer and cardiovascular diseases in the entire US. However, there are various factors that contribute to occurrence of these medical errors, the major one being inappropriate nurse staffing. This comes about when a healthcare facility has insufficient nurses to handle the number of patients at a given time. The case being so, nurses get fatigue and may confuse medication prescription between patients thus impacting a medication error.
Advanced practice nurses play an essential role towards solving the problem of medical errors in healthcare facilities. They are responsible for implementing therapeutic plans that helps the patients to be aware whenever a medical error has been subjected to them. After this, they are responsible for patients’ records evaluation and submitting them to the responsible staff. It is a practice that prevents healthcare providers from making any decision without being sure. Advanced practice nurses also ensure that all healthcare providers are practicing with optimum care and safety to avoid any errors. These nurses also offer counselling sessions to the nurses to ensure that safety is highly observed when delivering healthcare services. Professional Development Paper Essay
